What Is Being Made

The Berroco Carly is a 60" x 60" knit blanket designed by Brenda York from the Cotolana Fall 2017 Collection. This intermediate-level project creates a finished throw blanket composed of modular squares that are sewn together to form the complete piece. The blanket features a two-color colorwork design using contrasting yarn colors arranged in an alternating square pattern.

Project Structure and Design

The blanket is constructed from two different square designs, each worked using the same technique but with colors reversed. The pattern includes a diagram showing the placement of white squares (Square 1, predominantly in the first color) and gold squares (Square 5, predominantly in the second color). Squares are picked up or cast on following the diagram, with each square worked in a specific direction. Red lines on the diagram indicate where squares should be sewn together. Each square includes a selvedge stitch on all sides to facilitate ease of sewing or picking up stitches for adjacent squares. When working squares that form the outside edge of the blanket, those edges are worked in Garter Stitch for a finished appearance.

This pattern calls for Berroco Cotolana yarn, a premium fiber blend. The project requires 16 balls each of two colorways: #3501 White Pine (C1) and #3521 Tamarack (C2). Each ball weighs 50 grams, providing ample yardage for the 60" x 60" finished size.

Knitting is worked on straight needles in size 8 (5.00 mm), or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. A removable stitch marker is used to track the center stitch position as the blanket is constructed.
