Berroco Emery Knit Blanket

What is Being Made

The Emery is a knitted blanket and throw designed by Amy Christoffers. This intermediate-level project creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 44 inches wide by 54 inches long (not including fringe, after blocking). The blanket is an ideal size for a cozy throw suitable for sofas, chairs, or beds.

Techniques Used

The Emery blanket employs several key knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance. The pattern utilizes color work with multiple yarns, incorporating three coordinating colors that are worked throughout the design. The blanket features slip stitch color patterning, a technique where stitches are slipped rather than knitted to create visual texture and color effects without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork. The pattern instructions emphasize proper yarn management, including carrying yarn loosely up the side of the work and wrapping colors around each other at the beginning of every right-side row to prevent long loops and maintain even tension. The blanket is finished with fringe, adding a decorative edge detail. Blocking is recommended to achieve the stated finished measurements.

Stitches Used

The Emery pattern is constructed using fundamental knitting stitches combined in a repeating pattern stitch. The primary stitches include:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the basic foundation stitch used throughout
  • Slip stitch (sl) – stitches slipped with yarn in back (wyib) on right-side rows and with yarn in front (wyif) on wrong-side rows to create the color pattern effects

The pattern stitch repeats across 208 cast-on stitches and is worked over multiple rows, creating a structured geometric design through the strategic placement of knit and slip stitches in combination with color changes.

Materials

The Emery blanket is worked using Berroco Remix yarn, a yarn that provides excellent drape and color saturation for this project. The yarn requirements include 7 balls of Berroco Remix in color #3933 Patina (the main color), 2 balls each of #3901 Birch and #3922 Buttercup (contrast colors). Each ball weighs 100 grams. The blanket is worked on a 32-inch circular needle in size 9 (5.5 mm), which accommodates the 208 cast-on stitches comfortably. A size 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook is also required, likely for finishing the fringe detail. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in the pattern stitch, and checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the blanket reaches its intended finished measurements.
