Berroco Farmstead is a cozy beret and mitts set that features a marled colorblock section to transition between two colors. Two strands of Lanas Light are held together throughout each piece, making the marl an easy way to soften the switch between shades. Beret and mitts are knit seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, making for simple projects that are also useful for everyday wear as soon as the fall chill sets in.

Berroco Farmstead Knitting Pattern Set

The Berroco Farmstead pattern is a coordinated set designed by Mel Kennelly, featuring a pair of mitts and a matching beret created from the same yarn. This intermediate-level knitting project combines classic construction techniques with practical, wearable accessories perfect for seasonal layering.

Mitts

The mitts are constructed as a seamless, bottom-up project worked in the round. They feature three size options with finished measurements of approximately 7, 7½, or 8 inches around the hand and 6½ to 7 inches in length. The mitts begin with a ribbed cuff worked in stockinette stitch and progress through a shaped thumb gusset that creates a custom fit for the hand opening.

Construction Details: The mitts are cast on with 28, 30, or 32 stitches depending on size, then worked in a k1, p1 ribbing pattern for 1½ inches to create an elastic cuff. After the ribbing section, a single increase is worked to establish the proper stitch count for the hand. The thumb gusset is then shaped using strategic increases worked on either side of marked stitches, creating an expanding triangular section that accommodates the thumb. The pattern uses a methodical increase rhythm, working even rounds between increase rounds to maintain proper shaping.

Techniques Used: These mitts employ seamless, in-the-round knitting using double-pointed needles or preferred small circumference needles. The construction utilizes bottom-up shaping, meaning the cuff is worked first and the hand follows. Increases are worked using M1R (make one right) and M1L (make one left) techniques to create invisible, directional shaping for the thumb gusset.

Beret

The beret is a coordinating accessory worked in the same seamless, in-the-round construction method as the mitts. Two size options are available with finished measurements of approximately 17 or 18½ inches around the lower band, providing a classic, adjustable fit.

Construction Details: Like the mitts, the beret is worked from the bottom up in the round, beginning with the ribbed lower band and progressing upward. The bottom-up construction allows for easy fitting adjustments and creates a polished, finished appearance.

Techniques Used: The beret is constructed using the same seamless, in-the-round knitting method as the mitts, maintaining design cohesion throughout the set. The bottom-up approach provides flexibility in shaping the crown and allows for intuitive fitting during the knitting process.

Stitches and Techniques

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary fabric stitch used throughout both the mitts and beret, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
  • Ribbing (k1, p1): Used for the cuff sections, providing elasticity and a finished appearance
  • Make One Right (M1R) and Make One Left (M1L): Directional increase techniques used for shaping the thumb gusset with invisible, decorative increases
  • Seamless, In-the-Round Construction: Both pieces are worked continuously in rounds using stitch markers to denote the beginning of round and shaping sections
  • Bottom-Up Shaping: The pattern progresses from the cuff or band upward, allowing for fitted construction and easy adjustments

Materials

Yarn: The Farmstead set uses Berroco Lanas Light, a 100-gram ball weight yarn. The pattern calls for one ball each of two colorways: #78126 Cayenne (C1) and #78101 Fog (C2). Two strands of yarn are held together throughout the entire project, creating a thicker, more insulating fabric from the lighter-weight base yarn.

Needles and Notions: One set of size 7 / 4.5 mm double-pointed needles or preferred needles for working small circumferences is required. Additional notions include stitch markers (with one in a contrasting color to denote the beginning of round) and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Gauge: The pattern is worked to a gauge of 16 stitches and 22 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when two strands of yarn are held together. Gauge is measured after blocking, and checking gauge before beginning is essential for accurate finished measurements.

Skill Level

Designed for intermediate knitters, the Farmstead pattern assumes familiarity with in-the-round knitting,
