Blue Sky Fibers Bayport Pillow & Throw

What is Being Made

The Bayport Pillow & Throw is a coordinated set consisting of a 20" x 20" decorative pillow and a larger throw blanket measuring 60" x 44". Both pieces feature a three-color stripe pattern inspired by a landscape photograph taken in Peru. The design by Jane Veitenheimer combines the pillow and throw as complementary homeware items that can be used together or separately.

Techniques Used

Both the pillow and throw are created using seamless, worked-flat construction methods. The pieces are worked back and forth in rows rather than in the round, despite using circular needles. The circular needles are employed to accommodate the large number of stitches required for these projects, not for circular knitting. This flat construction approach makes the pattern accessible for beginners while producing professional-looking finished pieces.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern throughout both projects is a 1x1 rib, created by alternating knit and purl stitches. This foundational ribbed texture is maintained consistently across all rows, creating a structured yet flexible fabric. The simplicity of the 1x1 rib stitch makes this an ideal beginner-level project while producing a visually interesting and tactile finished product.

Color Sequence and Striping

Both the pillow and throw incorporate a three-color stripe pattern using the following Blue Sky Fibers Bulky colors:

  • Silver Mink (A) – Color No. 1002
  • Lynx (B) – Color No. 1001
  • Curry (C) – Color No. 1217

The pillow front and back feature distinct color sequences that create visual interest through strategic color placement across the 37 rows of the pillow pieces. The throw incorporates an extended color sequence spanning 103 rows, allowing for more elaborate striping that showcases the three colors in varying proportions.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn: Blue Sky Fibers Bulky is used exclusively for this project. This yarn is composed of 50% Alpaca and 50% Wool, offering a blend of softness, warmth, and durability. Each hank contains 100 grams and yields 45 yards.

Yarn Requirements:

  • For the Pillow: 4 hanks of Silver Mink (A), 6 hanks of Lynx (B), and 4 hanks of Curry (C)
  • For the Throw Blanket: 10 hanks of Silver Mink (A), 12 hanks of Lynx (B), and 6 hanks of Curry (C)

All yarn is worked double-stranded throughout, meaning two strands are held together as one. This double-stranded construction creates the distinctive chunky, super-bulky fabric that is described as "soft and dreamy."

Needles and Tools

  • Size 35 (19mm) circular needles, 42" length – or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. The large needle size accommodates the thick double-stranded yarn and the substantial stitch counts.
  • Tapestry needle – for weaving in ends and finishing
  • 20" x 20" pillow form – required for completing the pillow project

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 6 stitches and 7 rows = 4 inches when working the 1x1 rib stitch with two strands of Blue Sky Fibers Bulky yarn held together. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions for both the pillow and throw.

Experience Level

This pattern is rated as Beginner, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those seeking an accessible project. The straightforward 1x1 rib stitch requires only basic knitting knowledge, while the flat construction and clear color sequence instructions provide a manageable learning experience. Despite its beginner-friendly nature, the finished pieces produce impressive, professional-quality homeware items.
