Ella Rae Genie Baby Blankets

Project Overview

The Ella Rae Genie Baby Blankets pattern features two distinct knitted blanket designs worked from bottom up in a seamless, flat construction. Both blankets showcase the versatility of Ella Rae Cashmereno Sport yarn, a premium sport-weight fiber available in both solid and speckled colorways. These blankets combine elegant stitch work with practical sizing suitable for infants and young children.

Chevron Blanket

What is Being Made: A decorative baby blanket featuring a chevron lace pattern combined with garter stitch borders and horizontal stripes.

Finished Measurements: The Chevron Blanket measures 33½ inches in width (85 cm) and 37¾ inches in length (96 cm), making it an appropriately sized blanket for babies and toddlers.

Techniques Used: This design employs bottom-up construction, allowing the knitter to work from the cast-on edge upward. The blanket is seamless and worked flat on straight needles, eliminating the need for seaming. The pattern incorporates horizontal stripes created by alternating yarn colors throughout the project.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns: The Chevron Blanket begins with 10 rows of garter stitch (knit every row) worked on US 3 (3.25 mm) needles to create a stable, textured border. The main body transitions to US 5 (3.75 mm) needles and features a repeating chevron lace pattern. The lace sequence includes yarn overs (yo), slip-knit-pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, K1, psso), and knit two together (K2tog) decreases that create the characteristic V-shaped chevron motif. The pattern repeats over 26 rows, establishing a consistent stripe sequence using two yarn colors. Knitting continues in this established pattern until the blanket reaches approximately 37¾ inches in length, finishing with a bind-off worked knitwise on the wrong side.

Materials: The Chevron Blanket requires 10 x 50g balls of Ella Rae Cashmereno Sport Speckled in shade 106 Pacific Sunset (yarn A) and 3 x 50g skeins of Ella Rae Cashmereno Sport in shade 13 Ivory (yarn B). Needles required are one pair of US 3 (3.25 mm) needles and one pair of US 5 (3.75 mm) needles.

Gauge: The Chevron Blanket is worked to a gauge of 21 stitches and 42 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) measured in garter stitch using US 5 (3.75 mm) needles.

Textured Blanket

What is Being Made: A textured baby blanket featuring an intricate all-over stitch pattern with garter stitch borders, creating visual depth and tactile interest.

Finished Measurements: The Textured Blanket measures 39¾ inches in width (101 cm) and 39¼ inches in length (100 cm), providing a slightly larger finished size compared to the Chevron design.

Techniques Used: Like the Chevron Blanket, the Textured Blanket employs bottom-up construction, creating a seamless garment worked flat on straight needles. This approach allows for easy adjustments to length and eliminates finishing seams.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns: The Textured Blanket begins with garter stitch worked on US 3 (3.25 mm) needles to establish borders. The main pattern is worked on US 5 (3.75 mm) needles and consists of an 8-row repeat combining multiple stitch techniques. The pattern incorporates knit stitches, purl stitches, yarn overs, slip-knit-pass slipped stitch over decreases, and knit two together decreases arranged in a structured sequence. The combination of these stitches creates a complex textured fabric with alternating sections of lace-like openings and denser knitted areas. Garter
