Product Description

Sublimely soft in wool/silk/alpaca, Tennen, Noro 1421 Sequence Stripes Blanket is knit in a broken garter stitch pattern. It’s worked in alternating ten-stitch panels of knit and purl garter stitch, creating the look of crisscrossing vertical lines. It’s finished with an I-cord border. Subtle, tonal color shifts highlight the wool, alpaca, and silk blend of Noro’s  Tennen. This single ply, worsted weight yarn has a thick-to-thin texture and a lot of yardage, making it a great deal.

Noro Sequence Stripes Blanket

Project Overview

The Noro Sequence Stripes Blanket is a knitted throw blanket designed with an easy skill level, making it an accessible project for knitters of various experience levels. This blanket features a classic striped pattern worked in a bottom-up, seamless construction method, allowing crafters to build the blanket from the cast-on edge upward without requiring seaming.

Finished Dimensions

The completed blanket measures 54 inches wide by 60 inches long (137cm × 152.5cm), providing a generous throw-sized blanket suitable for draping over furniture or using as a cozy wrap.

What Is Being Made

This project creates a striped blanket using two coordinating colors of yarn. The blanket is constructed using a flat knitting method, meaning it is worked back and forth on needles rather than in the round, making it straightforward for knitters to follow row-by-row instructions.

Techniques Used

  • Bottom-up construction: The blanket is knitted starting from the bottom edge and progressing upward to the top edge, allowing knitters to easily adjust the final length if desired
  • Seamless construction: The blanket is created as one continuous piece without requiring seaming, reducing finishing work and creating clean, professional results
  • Stripe pattern: Color changes create horizontal stripes throughout the blanket, adding visual interest and showcasing the yarn's natural color variations
  • Worked flat: The blanket is knitted flat on straight or circular needles, with rows worked back and forth rather than in continuous rounds

Stitches Used

  • Broken Garter Stitch: The primary stitch pattern used throughout the blanket. This textured stitch creates a fabric with visual depth and elasticity, achieved through alternating knit and purl rows or stitches to create a broken, bumpy texture that differs from traditional garter stitch
  • Selvage stitches: Edge stitches worked at the beginning and end of rows to create clean, finished edges that facilitate seaming if needed and provide a polished appearance

Materials Required

The blanket is worked using Noro Tennen yarn, a premium yarn choice known for its unique color characteristics and quality construction. The project requires:

  • 5 × 100g hanks of Noro Tennen in colorway #30 (Color A)
  • 5 × 100g hanks of Noro Tennen in colorway #47 (Color B)
  • One US 9/5.5mm circular needle, 32 inches long (or appropriate needle size to obtain gauge)
  • One US J-10/6mm crochet hook (for finishing techniques such as edging or securing yarn ends)
  • Smooth waste yarn for stitch markers and provisional cast-ons

Gauge Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches over broken garter stitch using a US 9/5.5mm needle. Knitters are advised to take time to check gauge before beginning, as achieving the correct gauge ensures the finished blanket will match the intended dimensions and drape properly.

Construction Notes

For best results, the pattern editor recommends using LYKKE® needles and hooks, which are known for their quality and smooth working surface. The use of a circular needle, even for flat knitting, provides comfortable working length and reduces strain on the hands and wrists during extended knitting sessions. The inclusion of a crochet hook suggests finishing techniques such as single crochet edging or other crochet-based embellishments may be incorporated into the final blanket.
