These are two versions of knitted baby afghans designed by Plymouth Yarn using their Encore Chunky yarn. Each finished afghan measures 32 x 35 inches, making them an ideal size for wrapping and warming infants. The designs offer versatility with a decorative heart motif option (Version 1) and a solid pattern alternative (Version 2), allowing crafters to choose based on personal preference and skill level.
Both afghan versions are worked flat on straight needles using a bottom-up construction method, meaning you begin by casting on stitches at the bottom edge and work upward to the top. The project is seamless, eliminating the need for finishing seams and creating a smooth, professional appearance. This straightforward construction approach makes the pattern accessible to intermediate knitters while producing polished results.
Seed stitch forms the foundation and border of both versions. This classic textured stitch alternates knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, creating visual interest and structural stability. The seed stitch border is maintained on the first and last 5 stitches throughout the project, framing the central design area.
Version 1 (Hearts) incorporates a charted heart motif worked across the center 97 stitches. The pattern uses a 21-row chart that is repeated and read directionally—right to left on right-side rows and left to right on wrong-side rows. The hearts are interspersed with reverse stockinette sections (purl stitches on right-side rows) that provide contrast and allow the motifs to stand out. This version requires following a visual chart, making it suitable for knitters comfortable with chart reading.
Version 2 (No Hearts) simplifies the design by eliminating the charted motif, making it an excellent choice for beginners or those preferring a more straightforward knitting experience. The central pattern area uses stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) combined with seed stitch sections, creating a balanced, understated appearance.
The project requires 5 balls of Plymouth Yarn Encore Chunky (100g each), a bulky-weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a soft, durable fabric ideal for baby items. The recommended gauge is 3½ stitches and 5 rows per 1 inch when worked on US 10 needles or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Adjusting needle size to match gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
The chunky yarn and larger needle size result in a project that knits relatively quickly despite the finished size, making it practical for gift-giving timelines. The seed stitch borders provide textural appeal and help prevent curling, while the generous 32 x 35-inch dimensions offer adequate coverage for swaddling, tummy time, or stroller use. Both versions maintain balanced proportions and visual interest without overwhelming complexity.
