Shaun The Sheep Knitted Blanket Pattern
Project Overview
This is an advanced beginner knitting pattern for a 100% British wool blanket celebrating 30 years of the beloved Shaun the Sheep television characters. Designed by Chloé Elizabeth Birch and produced by West Yorkshire Spinners in collaboration with Aardman and The Campaign For Wool, the blanket features recognisable character faces and woolly cable details representing Shaun, Timmy, and Shirley in a patchwork design.
What is Being Made
The project creates a patchwork blanket composed of individual knitted squares. Each square features distinct design elements including recognisable character shapes, wooly cables, and the faces of the three main characters. The squares are worked separately and assembled to form the complete blanket.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Patchwork construction with individual knitted squares
- Cable knitting techniques for textured woolly details
- Intarsia or colour work methods to create character faces and shapes
- Blocking and reshaping while damp for finishing
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern utilises cable stitches as a primary textural element throughout the design. Tension is specified at 22 stitches over 10 centimetres or 4 inches on 4mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions and drape of the blanket.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The blanket is knitted using ColourLab DK yarn by West Yorkshire Spinners, a 100% British wool yarn in double knitting weight. The pattern calls for 4mm (US6) needles. Yarn quantities are approximate and based on average usage, with approximately 225 to 246 metres (or 100 yards) per 100g ball required. The ColourLab DK range features vibrant colours including Arctic, Zesty, Perfectly Pear, and additional shades specified in the pattern. West Yorkshire Spinners recommends using only the specified yarn for best results and cannot accept responsibility for finished items made with alternative yarns.
Finishing and Care
The completed blanket should be reshaped while damp to achieve the desired finished dimensions and appearance. Tumble drying is not recommended. The yarn is made in accordance with BS984 wool standards.
