Product Description
Swans Island Itty Bitty Blankie
What is Being Made
The Itty Bitty Blankie is a compact knitted baby blanket designed for portability and quick completion. This charming project is sized perfectly for covering car seats or fitting into a stroller, making it an ideal companion blanket for babies on the go. Unlike full-sized baby blankets that require extensive yardage and time investment, this little square blanket offers a satisfying knitting project that doesn't demand as many skeins or hours of work.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs seamless knitting worked flat on straight needles, eliminating the need for seaming after completion. The design incorporates cable techniques as a decorative element throughout the blanket. The pattern uses a structured approach with placed markers to help knitters track pattern sections and maintain consistency across the piece.
Stitches Used
- 1x1 Ribbing - Creates the border edge, worked for 1 inch at the cast-on edge
- Gull Pattern - The main stitch pattern featured in the central 98 stitches, worked from a charted pattern
- Knit and Purl stitches - Foundation stitches used throughout the pattern
- Cable stitches - Incorporated within the overall pattern design for textural interest
Materials and Specifications
The Itty Bitty Blankie is offered in two yarn options, each producing slightly different finished dimensions due to gauge variations:
Gray Blanket Version: Requires 2 skeins of Swans Island Pure Blends (85% Organic Merino Wool/15% Alpaca, worsted weight, 100 grams and 250 yards per skein) in the Seasmoke colorway. This version is worked on US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles and produces finished dimensions of 20" width by 22½" length, with a gauge of 5½ stitches and 7½ rows per 1 inch in pattern.
Blue Blanket Version: Requires 4 skeins of Swans Island Washable Wool (100% Washable Organic Wool, aran weight, 50 grams and 100 yards per skein) in the Wedgewood colorway. This version is worked on US size 8 (5 mm) needles and produces finished dimensions of 23¼" width by 23" length, with a gauge of 4¾ stitches and 6¾ rows per 1 inch in pattern.
Both versions begin with casting on 116 stitches and feature a 9-stitch border worked in established pattern on each side, with the central 98 stitches dedicated to the charted Gull Pattern. The pattern is designed by Alicia Plummer and is classified as an Easy difficulty level project.
