Valley Yarns Isle Royale Layette Set
Project Overview
The Isle Royale is a coordinating layette set designed by Susan Baron, featuring three complementary pieces perfect for welcoming a new arrival. This intermediate-level knitting project includes a baby sweater, matching hat, and blanket, all crafted from the same luxurious yarn for a cohesive gift presentation. Each piece is sized to grow with the baby, making this set practical and thoughtful for multiple stages of infancy.
Materials and Yarn
This entire layette set is knit using Valley Yarns Westhampton, a 100% Pima Cotton yarn in the Straw colorway (02). Pima cotton is prized for its exceptional softness and gentle feel against delicate baby skin, making it an ideal fiber choice for infant garments and accessories. The sweater requires 3 to 4 balls depending on size, the hat requires 1 to 2 balls, and the blanket requires 10 balls. Each ball contains 50 grams and approximately 109 yards of yarn.
Needles required include US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 24 to 32 inches and double-pointed needles (dpns) for the sweater and blanket, with US size 4 (3.50 mm) dpns used for the hat. Additional materials include stitch markers (including 6 locking stitch markers), waste yarn, a tapestry needle, five ⅜-inch buttons, and needle and thread matching the sweater for button attachment.
Sweater Construction and Techniques
The Isle Royale sweater showcases intermediate knitting techniques and thoughtful construction methods. The garment is worked seamlessly in the round using a strategic building approach: sleeves are knit first as individual pieces, then the body is worked in one continuous piece from the bottom upward until the sleeve tops are joined and yoke decreasing begins.
The sweater features a distinctive Crossed Diamond stitch pattern that adorns the lower portion of the garment, positioned above a garter stitch hem. To prevent rippling at pattern transitions, stitches are increased before the Crossed Diamond pattern and decreased after it, demonstrating advanced shaping awareness. The collar is integrated with garter stitch, and garter stitch button bands are picked up and worked at the end of construction, creating a finished, professional appearance.
The sweater is available in three sizes: 3 to 6 months, 6 to 12 months, and 12 to 24 months, with finished chest measurements of 18, 20, and 22 inches respectively. The pattern includes button closures for easy dressing and undressing of infants. Sleeves are initiated using the Knitted Cast-on Method, a technique that creates a neat, elastic edge ideal for baby garments.
Hat Construction
The coordinating hat is knit in the round using smaller needles to achieve a snug, comfortable fit. Available in the same three infant sizes with finished circumferences of 14, 16, and 18 inches, the hat is designed to match the sweater while providing practical warmth. The hat's construction complements the sweater's design elements, creating visual cohesion throughout the layette set.
Blanket Design
The blanket is a one-size project measuring 35 inches wide by 36 inches long, making it an ideal keepsake-sized throw for a bassinet, crib, or stroller. Knit in the same Pima cotton yarn as the sweater and hat, the blanket provides a substantial coordinating piece that ties the entire gift set together. The blanket's generous yardage requirement (10 balls) ensures a substantial, quality heirloom piece.
Gauge and Sizing Information
Proper gauge is essential for this project's success. The Crossed Diamond pattern should measure 22 stitches and 28 rows per round equals 4 inches when worked on the larger size needles and blocked. Stockinette stitch should measure 20 stitches and 28 rows per round equals 4 inches on the same needles when blocked. Achieving correct gauge ensures that all three pieces fit properly and maintain their intended proportions.
Stitch Techniques
- Garter Stitch: Used for the hem and integrated collar, creating a textured, reversible fabric with excellent drape for baby garments
