Valley Yarns #772 Cloe Cardigan
What is Being Made: The Cloe Cardigan is a knitted cardigan designed by Kirsten Hipsky, featuring an intermediate skill level. This garment is constructed in one continuous piece, beginning at the bottom of two separate fronts, progressing up and over the shoulders, joining at the back neck, and continuing down the back. Side seams are then sewn to the desired underarm location. The finished cardigan measures approximately 57 inches around, making it a generous, comfortable fit suitable for layering.
Techniques Used: This cardigan employs several intermediate knitting techniques that create visual interest and texture. The construction method of working in one piece from the front upward demonstrates advanced garment shaping. Lace elements are incorporated throughout the design using yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns. The pattern includes directional decreases such as knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) to shape the garment and create balanced decreases on either side of design elements. The use of knit through the back loop (k1b) adds textural variation. Double yarn overs (yo2) create larger openings in the lace pattern, adding dimension to the finished piece.
Stitches Used: The Cloe Cardigan utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in sophisticated ways. The stitch pattern features a 34-stitch and 28-row repeat that measures 6.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches long at gauge. Core stitches include knit (k), purl (p), yarn over (yo), yarn over twice (yo2), knit two together (k2tog), slip, slip, knit (ssk), knit through back loop (k1b), and slip, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over (sk2p). The initial ribbing uses alternating knit and purl stitches to create elastic edge definition. These stitches combine to form an intricate lace pattern that repeats across the front and back pieces.
Materials: The Cloe Cardigan requires 11 skeins of Valley Yarns Southwick yarn in the Mineral Green colorway. This yarn is composed of 52 percent Pima cotton and 48 percent bamboo, offering a blend of breathability and drape ideal for a cardigan. Each skein provides 105 yards at a 50-gram weight. The pattern calls for US size 6 (4.00mm) needles or the size necessary to achieve proper gauge. The recommended gauge is approximately 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch when worked in the stitch pattern, ensuring the finished cardigan will meet the specified dimensions and drape appropriately.
