Product Description
Polly Pullover by Spud and Chloe
What Is Being Made
The Polly Pullover is a seamless, top-down knitted sweater available in four sizes: XS, S, M, and L. This pullover features a classic crew neckline with ribbed collar detail and finished measurements ranging from 31¼ inches (XS) to 40¾ inches (L) in bust circumference. The center front length varies from 21½ inches (XS) to 25 inches (L), making it suitable for various body proportions and fit preferences.
Techniques Used
The Polly Pullover is constructed using seamless, top-down knitting methodology, which means the sweater is worked from the neckline downward in one continuous piece with minimal seaming. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, allowing for a smooth, tubular construction that eliminates the need for side seams. This technique provides a comfortable, stretchy fit and is ideal for creating a polished, professional finish.
The pattern employs the backwards loop cast-on method for establishing stitches at the neckline. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked at marked intervals, allowing the sweater to expand gradually from the fitted collar through the body and sleeves. Sleeve stitches are placed on waste yarn during the body division, then worked separately to completion.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the Polly Pullover is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a refined appearance. The collar features K1, P1 ribbing (knit one, purl one), worked over a multiple of 2 stitches for 4 rounds. This ribbed section provides elasticity and helps the neckline sit securely against the body without stretching out.
Shaping techniques include knit two together (k2tog) decreases and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases, which are worked at specific points to shape the armholes and sleeve caps. These decreases are strategically placed at marked positions to create a well-fitted garment with proper sleeve cap shaping.
Materials and Tools
The Polly Pullover requires two sizes of needles to achieve proper gauge and fit. Size 11 (8mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches are used for the ribbed collar and body work in stockinette stitch. Size 13 (9mm) double-pointed needles (two sizes larger) are used for the initial cast-on and collar ribbing to create a looser, more elastic edge.
Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, waste yarn for temporarily holding sleeve stitches during body construction, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and any finishing work. The pattern photo shows the sweater knitted in Hedge #7210 yarn.
Gauge is measured at 10 stitches and 15 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles, making accurate gauge swatching essential for obtaining proper finished measurements.
