What is Being Made

The Half-Pint Dress is a children's knit dress designed for sizes 2 through 10 years old. This garment features a classic A-line silhouette with finished measurements ranging from 20¼ inches to 32 inches in chest width, and lengths from 23¾ inches to 30¼ inches depending on size. The dress includes an optional pocket detail and a hood that is picked up and worked after the main body is complete.

Knitting Techniques

The Half-Pint Dress is constructed using a top-down, worked-in-the-round method, which allows knitters to easily customize the fit and length by trying the dress on as it progresses. This approach eliminates the need for seaming the body of the garment, resulting in a more seamless finished piece.

The dress features a striped color sequence that is worked throughout the yoke and body. The color pattern repeats four rows of main color (MC) followed by two rows of contrast color (CC1), creating a consistent striped effect across the dress.

Materials and Gauge

The Half-Pint Dress is knit with yarn in multiple colors. The photo shown features Life Jacket #7528 as the main color (MC), Ice Cream #7500 as contrast color one (CC1), and Splash #7510 as contrast color two (CC2). These are Spud and Chloe brand yarns.

The recommended gauge for this project is 19 stitches and 28 rounds equal 4 inches when worked in Stockinette stitch. Knitters should adjust tension as they work to ensure that the stitches on the knit piece match the tension of the stitches on the needle, particularly when grafting the hood closed with the Kitchener stitch.
