Adda Sweater in Berroco Aero

What is Being Made

The Adda Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed by the Berroco Design Team. This sweater features a fitted silhouette with waist shaping and is available in seven sizes ranging from 30" to 54" bust measurement, with finished lengths from 22" to 25". The sweater shown in the pattern is displayed in size 34" with approximately 2" of ease built into the fit.

Construction Technique

The Adda Sweater employs a popular seamless construction method. The body is worked in the round from the bottom up to the underarms using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming the body pieces together. Once the body reaches the underarm depth, it is divided into separate back and front pieces. The sleeves are worked flat rather than in the round, and are then set into the armholes. This hybrid approach combines the efficiency of circular knitting for the main body with the flexibility of flat knitting for the sleeves.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Adda Sweater uses fundamental knitting stitches to create its structure and texture:

  • Ribbing: The sweater begins with k1, p1 ribbing (knit one, purl one alternating rib) worked for 1½" at the lower edge. This elastic ribbing helps the garment conform to the body and prevents rolling.
  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The main body of the sweater is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates the classic smooth, V-textured fabric commonly seen in fitted sweaters.
  • Decreases: Strategic decreases are worked to create the fitted waist shaping. The pattern uses SSK (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) decreases positioned symmetrically on either side of stitch markers to maintain balanced shaping.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The Adda Sweater is designed specifically for Berroco Aero yarn. This yarn comes in 50-gram cakes, and the pattern requires 4 to 7 cakes depending on the finished size (4 cakes for the smallest 30" size up to 7 cakes for the largest 54" size). The sweater shown in the pattern photographs is knitted in Berroco Aero colorway #8014 Aurora Borealis.

Needles: The pattern calls for circular needles in two sizes. Size 11 (8.00 mm) needles are used for the ribbed cuff and for a 16" circular needle used during certain sections. Size 13 (9.00 mm) needles are used for the main stockinette stitch body worked on a 29" circular needle. Knitters should select the needle size that allows them to achieve the specified gauge.

Notions: Additional supplies include 2 stitch markers in different colors to mark the side seams, waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches, and optionally 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches and 16 rows equal 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on the larger size 13 (9.00 mm) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining accurate finished measurements, and the pattern instructions emphasize checking gauge before beginning the project to ensure proper fit.

Difficulty Level

The Adda Sweater is rated as an Easy skill level project, making it accessible to knitters with foundational experience in circular knitting, basic stitch techniques, and garment construction.
