Product Description
AMANO Rossina Mitts: Cable Knit Mittens
What Is Being Made
The Rossina Mitts are a pair of intermediate-level knitted mittens designed by Martha Wissing for AMANO's Fall Winter 15/16 collection. These are one-size mittens measuring 8 inches long by 6 inches around, suitable for fall and winter wear. The pattern includes both left and right mitt instructions with tailored shaping for each hand.
Techniques Used
The Rossina Mitts are worked in the round using double pointed needles, a fundamental technique for creating seamless cylindrical garments. The mittens feature cable work as the primary decorative element, with four repeats of a charted cable pattern integrated throughout the design. The pattern incorporates increases worked strategically to shape the mitt, including M1R (make one right) and M1L (make one left) increases for shaping the thumb gusset area. Stitch markers are used to track pattern repeats and shaping sections.
Stitches Used
The Rossina Mitts utilize several fundamental knitting stitches. Stockinette stitch (St st) forms the base fabric and is used for gauge measurement. Cable stitches create the textured pattern repeat worked over 24 stitches, with the charted pattern repeated four times throughout the mitt. Knit and purl stitches are combined in a k2, p2 ribbing pattern for the cuff and between cable sections. The pattern includes special charting notes for the first two and last two rounds of the initial and final repeats, indicating modified cable techniques at pattern boundaries.
Materials and Tools
The Rossina Mitts are knitted using AMANO MAYU yarn in colorway #2003 Earth Brown, requiring 2 hanks of 50 grams each. The project calls for two sets of double pointed knitting needles: size 5 (3.75 mm) needles for the ribbed cuff and size 6 (4.00 mm) needles for the main body, allowing for gauge adjustment as needed. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and waste yarn or small stitch holders for managing stitches during construction. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rounds per 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch using the larger needles.
