What Is Being Made

The Ando Jumper is an intermediate-level pullover sweater designed by Alison Green. This knitted garment is constructed as a top-down pullover available in ten sizes, ranging from 32" to 68¼" bust circumference. The finished length measures between 20" and 24" down the center back, depending on size. The pattern is shown in size 3 (40½" bust) modeled with approximately 6" of positive ease, with recommended ease of 2–6" for a comfortable fit.

Construction Technique

The Ando Jumper employs a top-down construction method, meaning the sweater is worked from the neckline downward in one continuous piece. The yoke—the fitted upper portion of the sweater connecting the neck to the body and sleeves—is shaped using short rows, a technique that creates gradual shaping by working back and forth over partial sections of stitches rather than completing full rounds. This approach allows for precise fit and elegant drape in the shoulder and upper chest area.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance on the right side. The pattern incorporates a Pattern Stitch that utilizes multiple yarn colors. When working the Pattern Stitch, knitters can keep the main color (MC) attached while also maintaining the first contrast color (CC1) attached when introducing the second contrast color (CC2), streamlining the color-work process and reducing the need to cut and rejoin yarns.

Yarn and Materials

The Ando Jumper is designed to be made with Berroco Merino 401, a premium merino wool yarn. Yarn quantities vary by size: smaller sizes require 8 balls of the main color, while the largest size (size 10) requires 14 balls. The main color shown in the pattern is #11288 Aegean, paired with one ball each of #11207 Fog (CC1) and #11247 Grape Soda (CC2) for color-work accents. Each ball of Berroco Merino 401 weighs 50 grams.

Needles required include circular needles in two sizes: US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles in both 16" and 32" lengths, and US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles in the same lengths. Additionally, a set of double-pointed needles or preferred small-circumference needles in both sizes 5 (3.25 mm) and 7 (4.5 mm) are needed for working the sleeve caps and other small circumferences. One stitch marker and waste yarn for holding sleeve stitches complete the notions required.

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles (US size 7 / 4.5 mm). Gauge is measured after blocking, making it essential to block a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure accurate finished measurements.
