Berroco Calleta Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Berroco Calleta is an intermediate-level cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers, featured in Berroco Booklet #363. This garment is available in seven sizes ranging from 36" to 60" finished bust measurement (closed), with finished lengths from 25" to 29" measured down the center back. The cardigan is designed with approximately 2 to 6 inches of ease, allowing for comfortable layering and movement.

Techniques Used

This cardigan employs several key knitting techniques that contribute to its sophisticated construction:

  • Lace work – Decorative lace patterning is incorporated into the design for visual interest and texture
  • Worked flat – The garment is constructed using flat knitting methods rather than in-the-round, allowing for traditional seaming
  • Sideways construction – The sleeves and upper section are worked horizontally, starting at the cuffs and progressing toward the center back
  • Three-needle bind off – Sleeves and upper sections are joined at the center back using this seaming technique, which creates a secure, finished edge
  • Seamed construction – After the main sections are complete, side seams and sleeve seams are sewn together to finish the garment

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern used throughout this cardigan is a Textured Pattern, which provides visual depth and interest to the finished fabric. This textured stitch is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches, making it essential to check gauge before beginning to ensure proper fit across all seven size options.

Materials Required

The Berroco Calleta is designed to be worked in Berroco Artisan yarn in the colorway Celtic Sea (#6027). Yardage requirements range from 12 hanks for the smallest size to 22 hanks for the largest size, with each hank weighing 50 grams. The pattern calls for two 29-inch circular knitting needles in size 7 (4.50 mm) for the main construction, along with straight knitting needles in the same size for additional sections. Two stitch markers are needed to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the project.
