Berroco Gusto is a marvelously bold and colorful yarn that combines 45% wool, 45% acrylic, and 10% viscose in a distinctive thick and thin construction. This blend creates a yarn that knits up quickly on large needles, making it ideal for creating big accessories with striking visual impact. Each skein contains 70 yards and weighs 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The yarn should be handwashed and laid flat to dry to maintain its quality and appearance.

Knitting Specifications

Projects made with Berroco Gusto use US 15 needles (10 mm) to achieve the proper gauge. The recommended gauge is 2 stitches per 1 inch in stockinette stitch, with 8 stitches and 12 rows equaling 4 inches (10 centimeters). This relatively loose gauge is typical for working with thick and thin yarns and contributes to the quick-knit nature of these projects.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The patterns in this collection employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for a range of skill levels. Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of many sections, while garter stitch is used to create textured areas with distinct ridged appearance. Construction methods include increasing stitches every other row to shape pieces and decreasing stitches using knit two together (k2tog) to taper sections. Circular needles and double-pointed needles (dpns) are employed for working in the round, particularly for projects like the Aspen design which features a thumb construction using waste yarn and later picked-up stitches. Binding off is performed loosely to maintain flexibility at edges. Weaving in ends and blocking are finishing techniques used to complete and refine the projects.

Pattern Details

The Aspen design demonstrates intermediate-level construction with details such as a thumb worked from stitches held on waste yarn, then divided onto three double-pointed needles and worked in garter stitch. The thumb decreases are worked using repeated knit two together stitches until only 3 stitches remain, then the yarn is secured through remaining stitches using a tapestry needle.
