Berroco Lavandin Lace Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Lavandin is an intermediate-level pullover sweater designed by Brenda York. This garment features a sophisticated lace pattern integrated into a fitted pullover silhouette, available in nine sizes ranging from 33" to 54" bust measurements. The finished length varies from 25½" to 28" depending on size selected. The design incorporates approximately 2–4" of ease for a comfortable, modern fit suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using seamed, worked-flat knitting techniques, meaning the front and back pieces are knitted separately on straight needles and then sewn together. The garment features lace patterning as a central design element, which is worked from a chart and strategically placed within the body of the sweater. The lace sections are separated by reverse stockinette stitch panels, creating visual interest and texture variation. Decreases are worked within the reverse stockinette sections rather than at traditional side edges, allowing the lace pattern to remain uninterrupted and creating a refined shaping method.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch used for the main fabric, providing a smooth, classic knit appearance
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch – Used in vertical panels flanking the lace chart sections, adding textural contrast and serving as the location for strategic decreases during armhole shaping
  • Lace Stitches – Worked from a charted pattern, creating openwork details that are a signature feature of this design
  • Garter Stitch – A single row of garter stitch (knit on wrong side) is worked at the cast-on edge for a finished edge treatment

Materials and Gauge

The Berroco Lavandin is designed to be knitted with Berroco Corsica yarn in the colorway #3616 Pear. Yardage requirements range from 6 to 11 balls (50 grams each) depending on the size selected. The pattern calls for straight knitting needles in size 5 (3.75 mm) for the main fabric and a 16" length circular knitting needle in size 4 (3.25 mm) for ribbed or fitted sections. Six stitch markers and two stitch holders are required to manage the multiple pattern sections during construction.

The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and fit, as the pattern is precisely engineered around this gauge specification.

Pattern Structure

The back and front pieces are worked separately using the same foundational technique. The pattern begins with a cast-on row followed by a setup row, then establishes the lace chart pattern with stitch markers placed to delineate each lace section and the reverse stockinette panels between them. The side sections are worked in stockinette stitch, providing stability and ease of shaping. As the sweater progresses toward the armholes, decreases are strategically incorporated within the reverse stockinette sections to create proper garment shaping while preserving the integrity of the lace pattern.
