What is Being Made

The Berroco Damele is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is available in seven sizes, ranging from 37" to 55" bust measurements, with finished lengths between 21½" and 24½". The sweater is designed with approximately 2–4" of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Technique

The Damele sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, worked-flat method. This approach means the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the shoulders, creating separate flat pieces (back, front, and sleeves) that are later seamed together. This traditional construction method allows for straightforward shaping and fitting adjustments throughout the knitting process.

Knitting Stitches and Shaping

The primary stitch used in this sweater is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern incorporates strategic shaping to achieve a fitted silhouette:

• Waist shaping: Decrease rows (using k2tog and SSK decreases) are worked every 1" for a total of 6 decreases, reducing the width by 12 stitches
• Hip shaping: Increase rows (using M1L and M1R increases) are worked every ½" for a total of 6 increases, returning the piece to its original stitch count
• Sleeve cap shaping: Stitches are cast on at the beginning of rows to create sleeve caps

Yarn and Needles
