What Is Being Made

The Berroco Cadi is a knitted cape designed by the Berroco Design Team. This garment is a women's cape with a structured silhouette, featuring finished measurements of approximately 63(67-71)" around at the lower edge and 34(38-42)" around at the shoulders, with a length of 21(22-23)". The cape is available in three size ranges: X-Small/Small, Medium/Large, and 1X/2X. The design includes button closures and a front band detail, making it a refined layering piece suitable for intermediate knitters.

Techniques Used

The Cadi cape is worked flat on circular needles, meaning it is knitted in rows back and forth rather than in the round. This flat construction method allows for easier shaping and the incorporation of design details such as the front band and buttonhole placements. The pattern includes strategic use of stitch markers to define pattern sections and maintain consistency across the width of the garment. Buttonholes are created using yarn-over and knit-two-together decreases, spaced approximately every 3½" along the front band for functional button closures.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is a Rib Pattern worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 3. The pattern alternates between two rows:

• Row 1 (Right Side): Knit 3, then repeat slip 1 stitch with yarn in front and knit 3 across
• Row 2 (Wrong Side): Knit 1, then repeat slip 1 stitch with yarn in front and knit 3 to the last 2 stitches, ending with slip 1 stitch with yarn in front and knit 1

This two-row repeat creates a textured, vertical ribbed appearance throughout the cape. The slip stitches worked with yarn in front add visual interest and dimension to the fabric. Garter stitch (knit every row) is used for the edge stitches and front band sections, providing a stable, non-curling border.

Materials

The Cadi cape requires 10(11-12) hanks of Berroco Artisan yarn in colorway #6042 Strait of Gibraltar. Berroco Artisan is a worsted-weight yarn, with each hank weighing 50 grams. A 29" length circular knitting needle in size 6 (4.00 mm) is required, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. The pattern also calls for 2 stitch markers to denote pattern sections and six 1" buttons for the front closures. The recommended gauge is 23 stitches and 37 rows over 4 inches when worked in the Rib Pattern, and checking gauge before beginning is emphasized to ensure proper finished measurements.
