Berroco Bonn Knit Top
What Is Being Made
The Bonn is a knitted top designed by Åsa Buchta, available in nine size options ranging from 34½" to 70" bust circumference. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished garment with length options from 19½" to 23", offering a versatile wardrobe piece suitable for various body measurements and style preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs circular knitting techniques, worked in the round from the bottom up. The construction begins with a cast-on worked on smaller needles, transitioning to larger needles for the main body. The design incorporates color work, combining a main color yarn with a contrasting color accent. Knitters will practice gauge management, stitch marker placement, and the alternation of yarn skeins to achieve even color distribution throughout the piece.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Bonn primarily features stockinette stitch (St st) as the main fabric, which creates a smooth, classic knit appearance. The pattern includes ribbed sections worked in alternating knit and purl rounds at the garment opening. Stitches are held on waste yarn during construction, allowing for later finishing and shaping of the neckline and armholes.
Yarn and Materials
Main Color (MC): Berroco Tillie, a hand-dyed yarn in colorway #10911 Pamuk, requires (2, 2, 2) to (4, 4, 4) hanks depending on size. Each hank weighs 100 grams. Berroco Tillie is specifically noted as hand-dyed yarn; the pattern recommends alternating skeins every two rounds or rows to avoid unintended color patterning.
Contrast Color (CC): Berroco Aerial in colorway #3435 Goldenrod requires (1, 1, 2) to (2, 2, 2) balls depending on size. Each ball weighs 25 grams. This lighter-weight yarn provides accent details throughout the design.
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires 32" circular needles in both size 3 (3.25 mm) and size 5 (3.75 mm), plus a 16" circular needle in size 3 (3.25 mm). Additional notions include stitch markers, removable stitch markers for construction, and waste yarn for holding stitches during shaping.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 23 stitches and 34 rows over 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. This gauge applies to both Berroco Tillie and Berroco Aerial when each is worked separately. Gauge is measured after blocking, and the pattern emphasizes the importance of checking gauge before beginning to ensure accurate finished measurements.
Skill Level
Designated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, gauge management, and basic color work techniques.
