What is Being Made

The Menden is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Åsa Buchta. The sweater is designed with positive ease of 2–4 inches for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Method

The Menden sweater is constructed using a flat knitting method. The back, front, and sleeves are each worked flat on needles, then sewn together during the finishing process. This construction approach allows for precise shaping of armholes and shoulders before the pieces are assembled into the completed garment.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate knit project uses a Pattern Stitch as the primary stitch structure throughout the garment. The pattern requires attention to gauge, with the stitch pattern worked on the larger needles at a gauge of 23 stitches and 32 rows equaling 4 inches over 10 centimeters when measured after blocking. Knitters will need to work armhole shaping and shoulder shaping as outlined in the pattern instructions, binding off stitches at specific intervals to create the garment's silhouette.

Yarn and Needles

The Menden is designed to be knit with Berroco Tillie yarn, a hand-dyed fiber available in the colorway #10935 Algodao. Yarn requirements range from 3 to 6 hanks depending on the size selected, with each hank weighing 100 grams. The pattern calls for two sizes of knitting needles: size 3 (3.25 mm) and size 5 (3.75 mm), with a 16-inch circular needle in size 3 (3.25 mm) also required. Special Yarn Considerations
