What is Being Made

The Lerici is a knitted top designed by Alison Green, available in nine sizes ranging from 34" to 70" bust measurement. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted garment with finished length measurements between 24¼" and 26¾" depending on size. The pattern is shown in the 42" bust size and is designed with approximately 2–4" of positive ease for comfortable wear.

Construction Technique

The Lerici employs a modern seamless construction method worked primarily in the round. The body is knitted as one continuous piece in the round up to the underarms, then divided to work the back and front separately in flat rows. The hem features shaping created using short rows, a technique that adds dimension and a custom fit to the garment's lower edge. Shoulders are finished using a three-needle bind-off, a professional joining method that creates a strong, neat seam without additional sewing.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Lerici is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates the classic smooth, V-textured fabric characteristic of knitted garments. The pattern incorporates short-row shaping in the hem, requiring knitters to work wrap and turn (w&t) techniques to create gradual increases in fabric width. Knitters will work multiple short-row repeats, with the final wrap and turn positioned as the second stitch from the beginning of round marker.

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for Berroco Vernazza yarn in colorway #10611 Bermeo. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 6 balls (300 grams) for the smallest size to 14 balls (700 grams) for the largest size. Each ball weighs 50 grams.

Needles and Notions: Knitters will need two circular needles—a 32" needle in size 8 (5 mm) for the main body work and a 16" needle in size 7 (4.5 mm) for ribbing or smaller circumference sections. Additional notions include one stitch holder, two stitch markers, and one removable stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and construction points.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch using the larger size 8 (5 mm) needles. Gauge is measured after blocking, making it essential for knitters to swatch, block their gauge swatch, and verify measurements before beginning the project to ensure the finished garment matches intended dimensions.
