Product Description
Berroco Adda Knit Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Berroco Adda is an easy-skill-level knit sweater designed by the Berroco Design Team. This pullover garment is available in seven sizes, ranging from 30" to 54" bust measurements, with finished lengths between 22" and 25" depending on size selection. The sweater is shown in a size 34" with approximately 2" of ease for a comfortable fit.
Construction Techniques
The Berroco Adda employs a combination of knitting techniques to create a well-structured garment. The body is worked in the round from the bottom up to the underarms using circular needles, which creates a seamless construction in this section. Once the body reaches the underarm depth, it is divided for the back and front, allowing for shaping at the neckline and armholes. The sleeves are worked flat, meaning they are knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round. After completion, the garment is seamed to join the various pieces together, creating a finished, wearable sweater.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
This pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches suitable for an easy skill level. The ribbing at the lower edge is worked in k1, p1 ribbing, alternating knit and purl stitches to create an elastic, fitted band that sits comfortably at the waist. The main body of the sweater is worked in stockinette stitch (St st), which produces the classic smooth, flat appearance characteristic of traditional knitwear. Shaping is achieved through decrease rounds that use SSK (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) techniques, which are standard decreases that lean in opposite directions and create a balanced, professional appearance in the finished garment.
Materials and Tools
The Berroco Adda is designed to be knitted with Berroco Aero yarn, a lightweight yarn that comes in 50-gram cakes. Depending on the size being made, the pattern requires between 4 and 7 cakes of yarn in the colorway #8014 Aurora Borealis. The needles required include 29" circular needles in sizes 11 (8.00 mm) and 13 (9.00 mm), with the smaller size used for the ribbed cuff and the larger size for the main body fabric. A 16" circular needle in size 11 (8.00 mm) is also needed for working smaller circumferences, such as at the neckline. Additional notions include stitch markers in two different colors to track pattern repeats and shaping points, waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches, and optional stitch holders for managing live stitches during construction.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches and 16 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished garment matches the intended measurements and fits properly. The pattern notes emphasize taking time to verify gauge to save time and ensure accurate finished dimensions.
