What is Being Made

The Agata is a rectangular knit shawl designed by Amy Christoffers, measuring approximately 22½" wide by 59" long after blocking. This easy-skill-level wrap is worked flat from cast-on to bind-off, making it an accessible project for knitters of various experience levels.

Techniques Used

This shawl is constructed using flat knitting on straight needles, with yarn carried loosely up the side of the work when not in active use. The design features two primary stitch pattern techniques:

• Stripe Pattern: Created by working 2 rows in Garter Stitch with one color, followed by 2 rows in a contrasting color, repeating this 4-row sequence throughout designated sections
• Check Pattern: A more complex colorwork technique alternating slip stitches and knit stitches across rows, creating a textured checked appearance when combined with solid knit rows in contrasting colors

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the Agata is Garter Stitch, which creates a reversible, textured fabric ideal for wraps and shawls. Garter Stitch is formed by knitting every row, producing horizontal ridges on both sides of the fabric. The Check Pattern incorporates slip stitches (abbreviated as "sl 1 wyib," meaning slip one stitch with yarn in back) worked in combination with knit stitches to create visual interest and texture variation.

Materials

The Agata calls for Berroco Corsica yarn in three colorways: 6 balls of #3602 Cork (main color), 1 ball of #3619 Fig (contrast color 1), and 1 ball of #3637 Menthe (contrast color 2). Each ball weighs 50 grams. Knitters will need straight needles in size 6 (4.00 mm) or the size required to achieve the specified gauge of 18 stitches and 28 rows equaling 4 inches in Garter Stitch after blocking. The pattern begins with casting on 101 stitches.

Construction Details

The shawl is worked in distinct sections with color changes creating visual blocks. The construction begins with a 3-inch foundation in Garter Stitch using the main color, followed by a 5-inch section incorporating the Check Pattern with contrast color 1. An 8-inch stripe section follows, alternating between the secondary contrast color and main color in 2-row repeats. The piece concludes with a 2-inch Garter Stitch section in the secondary contrast color before binding off. Blocking is recommended to achieve the finished measurements and to even out the fabric texture.
