Berroco Alee Lace Cape

What is Being Made

The Berroco Alee is an elegant lace cape designed by Donna Yacino, suitable for intermediate knitters. This garment features a fitted neck opening that gradually widens toward the lower edge, creating a flattering draped silhouette. The cape is available in three finished sizes with neck measurements of 24, 25, or 26 inches around, lower edge measurements of 46½, 49½, or 52½ inches around, and lengths of 15½, 16, or 16½ inches respectively.

Construction Methods and Techniques

The Alee employs a strategic two-part construction approach that combines flat knitting with circular knitting techniques. The top section of the garment is worked flat on a circular needle, creating a rectangular piece with cast-on and bound-off edges that are later sewn together. Once the top section is complete, stitches are picked up around one long edge and the bottom section is worked downward in the round using stockinette stitch. This hybrid approach allows for precise shaping at the neckline while enabling efficient circular knitting for the body of the cape.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Alee incorporates sophisticated lace stitchwork throughout the top section. The pattern utilizes several key techniques including yarn overs (yo) for creating decorative openings, purl two together (p2tog) decreases for shaping, and slip stitches worked with yarn held in front or back to create texture and visual interest. The lace pattern involves manipulating yarn-over spaces by slipping multiple strands together and purling loose strands, creating an intricate openwork design. The bottom section transitions to stockinette stitch (St st), which provides a smooth, refined finish to the garment.

Yarn and Needle Specifications

The Alee is designed to be knitted with Berroco Quinoa, a yarn that provides excellent drape and stitch definition ideal for lace work. The pattern requires 3, 4, or 4 balls of Berroco Quinoa (50 grams per ball) depending on size, in colorway #1044 Millet. Knitting is worked on a 24-inch circular needle in size 6 (4.00 mm), or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. The pattern also requires 3 stitch markers, with one marker in a different color to denote the beginning of the round.

Gauge and Sizing Information

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The pattern stitch section should measure 23 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches, while stockinette stitch sections should measure 22 stitches and 30 rounds over 4 inches. The pattern includes a reminder that checking gauge before beginning will save time and ensure the finished cape meets the intended measurements.
