Berroco Alegria Crochet Shawl

What is Being Made

The Alegria is a crocheted shawl designed by Mel Kennelly, finished to approximately 25 inches on all sides. This intermediate-level project creates a lace shawl worked seamlessly in the round, resulting in a geometric triangular construction that builds outward from a central point.

Craft and Construction Method

This shawl is created using the crochet technique, specifically designed to be worked in the round from the center outward. The seamless construction eliminates the need for seaming, as the entire piece develops as one continuous fabric. The pattern begins with a sliding loop foundation and progresses through multiple rounds that expand the triangular shape systematically.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Lace Construction: The shawl features lace patterning created through strategic spacing and openwork, incorporating chain spaces and decorative stitch combinations that create an airy, delicate appearance
  • Seamless In-the-Round Construction: Built from a center point outward, eliminating seams and creating a unified fabric
  • Geometric Shaping: The pattern uses corner increases and repeated motifs to form the triangular silhouette
  • Stitch Combinations: The design incorporates decorative corner elements with multiple double crochet stitches grouped together

Stitches Used

  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Half double crochet (hdc)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Chain stitches (ch) in various counts
  • Slip stitch (sl st) for joining
  • Sliding loop foundation method

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for two yarns held together throughout the project. Berroco Carousel (100 grams per ball) in colorway #4423 Dunk Tank requires 3 balls, combined with Berroco Aerial (25 grams per ball) in colorway #3454 Lilac, requiring 4 balls. Holding these two distinct yarns together creates color blending and textural interest.

Tools: A size H / 5 mm crochet hook is required, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. Gauge is measured after blocking and should produce a full triangle measuring 4 inches on each side.

Skill Level and Finishing

Designed as an intermediate project, this shawl requires familiarity with fundamental crochet techniques and the ability to follow multi-round pattern repeats. Blocking is essential for achieving accurate finished measurements and proper drape of the lace fabric.

Easy pattern makes a beautiful shawl, or scarf! The instructions for joining the motifs are clear and easy to follow. I'm currently working on 3 different projects using this pattern. Different yarn styles and weight (for scarves) come out looking very different, very unique.
