Berroco Audre Knit Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Audre is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers, featured in Booklet #390 version 2. This pullover garment is available in seven sizes, ranging from 35" to 59" finished bust measurements, with the back intentionally designed 2" longer than the front for a contemporary silhouette. The sweater is shown in a size 38½" with approximately 2–4" of ease built into the design for comfortable wearing.

Techniques Used

The Audre employs a combination of bottom-up construction and seamed assembly methods. The garment begins with flat ribbing worked on the back and front pieces separately, which are then joined together. The body is subsequently worked in the round to the underarms using circular needles, creating seamless fabric in the main body section. Once the underarms are reached, the front and back are divided and worked separately in rows for the upper body shaping. The sleeves are worked in the round to the underarm, with the sleeve caps then worked flat and sewn into the armholes using traditional seaming techniques.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing: The pattern uses a 2x2 ribbing (alternating knit 2, purl 2) for the cuffs and body ribbing, creating stretch and structure at the edges
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary fabric throughout the sweater body and sleeves is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, classic knit appearance

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The pattern calls for Berroco Bento yarn in colorway #8703 Soba. Quantities range from 13 to 22 balls depending on size selected, with each ball weighing 50 grams. The yarn choice provides the specific gauge and drape characteristics essential to the sweater's finished appearance.

Needles and Notions: Construction requires 29" circular needles in sizes 6 (4.00 mm) and 8 (5.00 mm), with the larger size used for the main fabric and the smaller size for ribbed sections. A 16" circular needle in size 6 (4.00 mm) is needed for the collar. One set of four double-pointed needles (dpns) in both sizes 6 and 8 are required for working the sleeves in the round. Additional notions include stitch markers, two stitch holders for holding stitches during construction, and waste yarn for temporarily securing stitches.

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles before blocking. After blocking, the gauge adjusts to 17 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper finished measurements and fit.

Size Range and Finished Measurements

The Audre is offered in seven sizes with finished bust measurements of 35", 38½", 42", 46", 50", 54", and 59". Back length varies slightly across sizes, ranging from 26½" to 28", accommodating different body proportions across the size range.
