Product Description
Berroco Bennett Knit Sweater
What is Being Made
The Berroco Bennett is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers from Book #413. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 36½" to 73" bust measurements, with corresponding lengths from 21½" to 25½". The sweater is shown in size 41" and features a classic pullover construction with positive ease of 4–8" for comfortable wearing.
Construction and Techniques
Bottom-Up Construction: The Bennett sweater is worked in pieces from the bottom up, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed. This method provides flexibility and control over the final fit.
Cable Work: The sweater features charted cable patterns that create visual interest and texture throughout the garment. Knitters will work from a detailed chart, repeating Rows 1–16 to establish the cable pattern across the body pieces.
Seamed Assembly: Individual pieces are knit flat and then seamed together, providing clean, structured seams. The shoulder seams are joined using the 3-needle bind off technique, which creates a strong, professional finish at the shoulder line.
Shoulder Shaping: The sweater incorporates short-row shaping at the shoulders to create a better fit and more tailored silhouette.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) for the welts and cuffs, creating elasticity and structure
- Cable stitches as indicated in the charted pattern
- Make 1 Left (M1L) and Make 1 Right (M1R) increases for shaping
- 3-needle bind off for joining shoulder seams
Materials and Gauge
The Bennett is designed to be knit with Berroco Ultra Wool Chunky yarn, a substantial worsted-weight option. Yardage requirements range from 5 balls (500 grams) for the smallest size to 11 balls (1,100 grams) for the largest size. The specific colorway shown is #43147 Stonewashed.
Needles Required: Knitters will need two sizes of 29" circular needles—size 9 (5.50 mm) for ribbing and size 10½ (6.50 mm) for the main fabric—as well as a 16" circular needle in size 9 for neckline work. Additional notions include a cable needle, one stitch marker, waste yarn for holding stitches, and a spare needle in size 10½ for the 3-needle bind off.
Gauge: The pattern is worked to a gauge of 14 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches in the charted pattern on the larger needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure accurate finished measurements.
