Berroco Berty Hot Water Bottle Cover
What is Being Made
The Berroco Berty is a knitted hot water bottle cover designed by Margaux Hufnagel. This intermediate-level project creates a cozy, decorative cover that fits an average-sized hot water bottle, measuring approximately 19 inches (48 cm) around and 13 inches (33 cm) in height. The finished cover is both functional and visually appealing, making it an ideal gift or personal accessory for keeping warm beverages at the desired temperature while adding a handmade touch to home comfort items.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques that build skill and create visual interest. The project begins with the Turkish cast-on method, a technique that allows knitters to cast on stitches directly onto two needles simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate cast-on edge. The cover is worked in the round using circular needles, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for a fitted bottle cover.
Shaping is achieved through strategic increases worked at regular intervals. The pattern incorporates M1L (make one left) and M1R (make one right) increases, which are directional increases that help create balanced shaping on both sides of the cover. These increases are repeated every round for eight rounds, gradually expanding the circumference from 32 stitches to 68 stitches to accommodate the widest part of the hot water bottle.
Color work is an essential element of the design. The pattern uses stranded colorwork or color changes worked in horizontal bands, alternating between the main color and four contrast colors in a planned sequence. This creates a visually striking striped effect with color blocks that showcase the different yarn shades available in the Berroco Remix Chunky line.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch throughout the Berty is stockinette stitch (St st), which is created by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side when working flat, or knitting every round when working in the round. This classic stitch creates a smooth, flat fabric with a V-pattern appearance on the right side, providing an excellent canvas for color work and textural elements.
A signature textural element is the bobble, created using the special abbreviation MB (Make Bobble). The bobble technique involves knitting into the front, back, front, and back of a single stitch to create four loops on the needle, then lifting the first three loops over the last loop to secure a dimensional, bumpy texture. These bobbles add visual and tactile interest to the cover, creating a playful, dimensional surface that contrasts with the smooth stockinette base.
The pattern also incorporates basic increases including M1L and M1R, which are invisible or nearly invisible increases that maintain the integrity of the fabric while adding stitches for shaping.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Berty is knitted using Berroco Remix Chunky yarn, a bulky-weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a warm, substantial fabric. The pattern calls for one 100-gram ball each of five coordinating colors: #9901 Birch (the main color), #9922 Buttercup (contrast color 1), #9930 Smoke (contrast color 2), #9960 Strawberry (contrast color 3), and #9984 Ocean (contrast color 4). A helpful note indicates that the bottle cover can be made using leftover contrast yarns from other Berroco patterns, such as the Lilo, Lina, and Linde pillows, making this an excellent stash-busting project.
The project requires two 24-inch (60 cm) circular needles in size 10 (6 mm), or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. Circular needles are essential for working in the round without seams, and having two needles allows for the magic loop technique or small-circumference knitting methods if preferred.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 20 rows equals 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. Accurate gauge is emphasized as critical for ensuring the finished cover fits properly around the hot water bottle. Knitters are advised to take time to check gauge before beginning the project to avoid sizing issues and ensure the final measurements match the intended 19-inch circumference.
