Berroco Carve Knit Poncho

What is Being Made

The Berroco Carve is a seamless, top-down knit poncho designed by Mel Kennelly. This intermediate-level project creates a versatile layering piece with finished lower edge measurements available in three sizes: 56 inches (142 cm), 61¼ inches (155.5 cm), and 66¾ inches (169.5 cm). The poncho measures 19 inches (48.5 cm) in length, not including the collar, making it an elegant and wearable garment suitable for various occasions and body types.

Construction and Techniques

This poncho is worked seamlessly in the round from the neck down, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish. The top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust the final length to personal preference. The seamless, worked-in-the-round technique ensures consistent fabric quality throughout and provides a comfortable fit without bulky seams.

The design incorporates stranded colorwork, introducing visual interest through the use of multiple yarn colors worked simultaneously. This technique requires careful tension management to maintain even fabric and prevent puckering where colors change.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Carve poncho features two primary stitch patterns:

  • Knit 1, Purl 1 (k1, p1) Ribbing: Used for the collar section, this classic ribbing creates vertical texture and provides stretch and recovery, ensuring the neckline hugs comfortably without sagging. The ribbing is worked for 8 inches (20.5 cm) before transitioning to the body.
  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): Comprises the main body of the poncho, creating a smooth, flat fabric that showcases the stranded colorwork pattern. Strategic increases are worked throughout the body to shape the poncho from the narrow collar to the wider lower edge.

Increases are distributed evenly using make-one (M1) techniques at regular intervals—first every 4 stitches, then every 5 stitches, and finally every 6 stitches—to create gradual, invisible shaping that maintains the garment's elegant drape.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This project uses Berroco Lanas Quick yarn, a worsted-weight fiber available in 100-gram hanks. The color palette consists of three shades: Cream (#7701) as the main color, with Fuschia (#77207) and Limelight (#77115) as contrast colors. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 5 hanks of the main color for the smallest size to 7 hanks for the largest, plus 1 hank each of the two contrast colors.

Knitters will need two circular needles in sizes 10 (6 mm) and 11 (8 mm): a 16-inch (40 cm) needle for the collar and initial body rounds, and a 32-inch (80 cm) needle for later rounds when stitch counts increase. A single stitch marker is required to denote the beginning of each round.

Gauge and Finishing

Accurate gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 12 stitches and 18 rounds equal 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using the larger needle, and 14 stitches and 21 rounds equal 4 inches (10 cm) in k1, p1 ribbing using the smaller needle. Gauge should be measured after blocking to ensure proper finished measurements. Taking time to check gauge before beginning prevents sizing issues and ensures the poncho drapes as intended.
