Product Description
Berroco Ceira Cardigan: Seamed Knit Pattern
What is Being Made
The Berroco Ceira is an intermediate-level cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers, available in seven sizes ranging from 36" to 60" bust measurement (closed). The finished cardigan length varies from 21½" to 24½" depending on size. This garment is shown in the 48" size with approximately 7" of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Construction Technique
The Ceira cardigan is worked flat in two separate pieces, beginning at the sleeve cuffs and progressing toward the center back. This two-piece construction method allows for strategic shaping and customization of fit. Once both pieces are completed, they are joined at the center back using a three-needle bind off, a professional seaming technique that creates a strong, finished seam. The front, neck, and cuff edges are finished with an applied I-Cord, which adds a refined, tailored edge detail to the garment.
Knitting Stitches and Techniques
The primary stitch used throughout the Ceira is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases worked on the right side using M1L (make one left) and M1R (make one right) increases, which are nearly invisible increases ideal for fitted garments. The increase frequency varies by size: some sizes feature increases every 4th row, others every 6th row, and still others every 8th row, allowing the pattern to accommodate different sizing while maintaining proportional shaping.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Ceira is designed to be knitted with Berroco Linen Stonewash yarn in the colorway #7305 Granite. This yarn comes in 50-gram balls, and the pattern requires between 9 and 15 balls depending on the finished size selected. The linen content of this yarn provides a breathable, summery fabric suitable for a cardigan.
Needle requirements include two 29" circular needles in size 6 (4.00 mm), which are used to work the flat pieces. Additional notions include a spare size 6 (4.00 mm) knitting needle, two size 3 (3.25 mm) double-pointed needles for the I-Cord edging, and waste yarn to hold stitches during construction.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 22 stitches and 31 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining accurate finished measurements, and the pattern instructions emphasize checking gauge before beginning to ensure proper fit and drape.
