Product Description
Berroco Claudia Knit Sweater
What is Being Made
The Berroco Claudia is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is available in eight sizes, ranging from 37 inches to 67½ inches in bust measurement, with finished lengths between 21¾ and 24¾ inches. The pattern is designed with 8–10 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Construction Techniques
The Claudia sweater employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning the garment is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the neckline. The sweater is worked flat on straight needles for the main body pieces, which are then seamed together to create the finished garment. Certain sections, such as the neckline or sleeves, are worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles to create seamless edges in those areas.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The ribbed edging features twisted stitches (p1tbl and k1tbl), which create a textured, refined border. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch (St st), the most common knit stitch pattern, which produces a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side and horizontal bumps on the wrong side.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Claudia sweater is knitted using Berroco Cambria yarn. Depending on the size selected, the pattern requires between 5 and 10 hanks of yarn (each hank weighs 50 grams), with the sample shown in color #7907 Beech. The yarn is worked at a gauge of 21 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches on the larger needles.
The pattern calls for two sizes of knitting needles to create different fabric densities. Smaller needles (size 4 / 3.5 mm) are used for the ribbed edging, which creates a tighter, more elastic border. Larger needles (size 6 / 4 mm) are used for the main body in stockinette stitch. Additional tools include a 16-inch circular needle in size 6 / 4 mm for working sections in the round, one set each of double-pointed needles in both sizes, a stitch holder for securing stitches temporarily, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases.
