What Is Being Made

The Berroco Claverick is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is available in eight sizes, ranging from 32" to 60" bust measurement (closed), with finished lengths between 23¼" and 26¼" depending on size. The cardigan features a classic button-front closure with five buttons and includes functional patch pockets with sewn-on front bands.

Construction Techniques

The Claverick employs a hybrid construction method that combines multiple knitting approaches for efficiency and fit. The body is worked flat in one piece from the bottom up to the underarms, while the sleeves are simultaneously worked in the round using the same method. Once both sleeve sections reach the underarms, all pieces are seamlessly joined together to work the yoke as one continuous piece, eliminating the need for seaming at the shoulders. This seamless yoke construction creates a smooth, professional finish. The front button bands are worked separately and then sewn onto the finished cardigan for a polished appearance.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Claverick primarily uses two fundamental knitting stitches:

Materials and Gauge

The Claverick is knitted using Berroco Providence yarn in color #1107 Ives. Yardage requirements range from 7 to 13 balls (50 grams each) depending on the size being made. The pattern calls for two sets of needles: size 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles measuring 29" for ribbing and smaller sections, and size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles for the main fabric. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needle after blocking, which is essential for achieving accurate finished measurements. Recommended ease is 2–4 inches for a comfortable, wearable fit.
