What Is Being Made

The Courgette is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Mel Kennelly. This intermediate-level project is available in nine sizes, ranging from 36 inches to 72 inches bust measurement, with finished lengths between 19½ and 22½ inches. The sweater is shown in size 40 inches (101.5 cm) and features a classic pullover silhouette with approximately 2–4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Method

The Courgette sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, worked flat approach. Individual pieces are knitted separately in flat rows and then seamed together to create the finished garment. This construction method allows knitters to try on the sweater as pieces are completed and provides flexibility in customizing fit before final assembly.

Cable Techniques and Stitch Work

Cable knitting is the signature design element of this sweater. The pattern features multiple cable panels worked over different stitch counts:

• Center Cable: Worked over 20 stitches with a gauge of 20 stitches equaling 3¾ inches (9.5 cm). This cable is created by slipping 6 stitches to a cable needle and holding them in front, then knitting 6 stitches from the main needle before knitting the 6 stitches from the cable needle.
• Left and Right Cables: Worked over 18 stitches with a gauge of 18 stitches equaling 2½ inches (6.5 cm). These flanking cables frame the center cable design.
• Reverse Stockinette Stitch: The primary background stitch used throughout the sweater, providing a smooth, recessed surface that makes the cables stand out visually. Reverse stockinette is worked at a gauge of 16 stitches and 24 rows equaling 4 inches (10 cm) on the larger needles.

Cable patterns can be worked from written row-by-row instructions or from charted representations, giving knitters the option to follow their preferred method.

Materials Required

Yarn: Berroco Remix Chunky yarn in color #9982 Blue Note. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 8 balls (approximately 800 grams) for the smallest size to 18 balls (approximately 1,800 grams) for the largest size. Each ball weighs 100 grams.

Needles and Notions: The pattern calls for US size 8 (5 mm) and US size 9 (5.5 mm) knitting needles, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. A 16-inch circular needle in size 8 (5 mm) is required for neckline finishing. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable crossovers throughout the pattern. Stitch markers, removable stitch markers or waste yarn for marking pattern sections, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction are also necessary.

Gauge and Blocking

Accurate gauge is critical for this project. The pattern specifies different gauges for different stitch patterns, all measured after blocking. Knitters should take time to check gauge in reverse stockinette stitch before beginning to ensure the finished sweater matches the intended measurements. Blocking is required to achieve the stated gauges and final dimensions.
