What is Being Made

The Berroco Elmhurst is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by the Berroco Design Team. This garment is available in eight sizes, ranging from 32" to 60" bust measurement, with finished lengths between 22" and 24". The sweater is designed with 2–4" of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Elmhurst sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-in-the-round approach. This method means the knitter begins at the lower edge of the body and works upward in continuous rounds, eliminating the need for seaming. Working in the round creates a smooth, tubular fabric and is ideal for achieving consistent stitch definition throughout the garment.

The pattern begins with the body section, which is cast on using a circular needle and joined to work in the round. A ribbed cuff is established at the hem, providing elasticity and structure at the lower edge. The body is then worked in stockinette stitch until the underarm shaping begins, where stitches are bound off to create armholes. This seamless construction method is particularly valued for its clean finish and the way it eliminates visible seams along the sides and underarms.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern used in the Elmhurst is stockinette stitch (St st), which is created by knitting every round when working in the round. This classic stitch produces a smooth, V-textured fabric on the right side. The hem features a 1×1 ribbed pattern (alternating knit and purl stitches), which provides stretch and helps the lower edge sit neatly against the body.

Needles and Tools

The Elmhurst pattern requires two sizes of circular needles to achieve proper gauge and fit:

• 16" circular needle in size 3 (3.25 mm) for the ribbed cuff
• 29" circular needle in size 3 (3.25 mm) for initial body shaping
• 29" circular needle in size 4 (3.50 mm) for the main body stockinette stitch
• One set of double-pointed needles in sizes 3 (3.25 mm) and 4 (3.50 mm) for working the upper portions and sleeves

Yarn and Materials

The Elmhurst is designed to be knitted with Berroco Providence™, a yarn produced by Berroco, Inc. The pattern calls for 5 to 9 balls of Providence yarn (depending on size), with each ball weighing 50 grams. The yarn shown in the pattern sample is #1116 Atlantic. Berroco recommends using the specific yarn called for in the pattern instructions to ensure accurate gauge and finished measurements.
