Berroco Enia Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Enia is an intermediate-level cardigan designed by the Berroco Design Team. This garment is available in eight size options, ranging from 37" to 70" bust circumference (closed), with finished lengths between 19½" and 23" including the lower band. The cardigan is designed with approximately 4–6" of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Technique

The Enia cardigan uses a distinctive sideways construction method. The upper section of the garment is worked in one continuous piece from the right cuff to the left cuff, rather than the traditional method of working from bottom to top. After the main body is complete, the collar is picked up and worked separately, followed by the lower band which is picked up and worked downward. This sideways approach creates interesting design possibilities and allows for strategic color placement throughout the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

Garter Stitch is the sole stitch pattern used throughout the entire Enia cardigan. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row on both the right side and wrong side, producing a reversible fabric with distinctive horizontal ridges. This classic stitch is beginner-friendly in execution but requires attention to tension and gauge to achieve professional results. The pattern includes increase rows worked on the right side to shape the garment as it progresses from cuff to cuff.

Yarn and Materials

The Enia cardigan is designed to be worked with Berroco Tiramisu, a yarn that comes in 50-gram balls. The pattern calls for three coordinating colors:

  • Mascarpone (MC) in color #9209 — the main color, requiring 6 to 11 balls depending on size
  • Pizzelle (CC1) in color #9227 — a contrasting color, requiring 3 balls for all sizes
  • Tartufo (CC2) in color #9236 — a secondary contrasting color, requiring 1 ball for all sizes

The color work is integrated into the sleeve sections early in construction, with the contrasting colors appearing in 8-row bands before returning to the main color.

Needles and Notions

The Enia cardigan requires the following tools and notions:

  • One 32" / 80 cm circular needle in size 8 / 5 mm
  • One spare circular needle in size 8 / 5 mm or smaller (for holding stitches)
  • Two stitch holders

Circular needles are used throughout the project, even for flat knitting, which is a common modern technique that reduces the number of tools needed and can prevent stitches from sliding off the needle.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in Garter Stitch. This gauge measurement is taken after blocking, making it essential to block your finished cardigan to achieve the intended finished measurements. Checking gauge before beginning is strongly recommended to ensure accurate sizing and proper garment proportions.
