Berroco Eyre & Rochester Knit Sweaters

What is Being Made

The Berroco Eyre & Rochester collection features two intermediate-level knit sweaters designed by Amy Christoffers. These garments are pullover-style sweaters available in eight size options, ranging from 35 inches to 63 inches in bust measurement, with finished lengths between 25 and 27 inches. The sweaters are designed to be versatile layering pieces with approximately 3 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting construction techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The sweater begins with a ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles to create a fitted edge, then transitions to larger needles for the main body. The pattern incorporates set-up ribbing to establish stitch definition at the garment's lower edge. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic bind-offs at the beginning of rows to create fitted sleeve caps. Shoulder shaping uses graduated bind-offs to create a sloped shoulder line that provides proper garment fit. The construction follows a traditional flat knitting method with separate front and back pieces that are later seamed together.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the sweater body, creating a smooth, classic fabric with V-shaped columns on the right side
  • Ribbing (K2, P2): A 2x2 knit-purl alternation used for the set-up ribbing at the lower edge, providing elasticity and a finished appearance
  • Bind-off: Used extensively for armhole and shoulder shaping to decrease stitches and create structured edges

Materials and Gauge

The Eyre & Rochester sweaters are designed to be worked in Berroco Mercado yarn, a worsted-weight fiber available in the colorway #4160 Ciruela. Depending on size selection, the project requires between 5 and 9 hanks of yarn, with each hank weighing 100 grams. Knitters will need US size 7 (4.50 mm) needles for the ribbed cuff and US size 9 (5.50 mm) needles for the main body, or sizes adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern requires a gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Additional notions include one stitch holder and one stitch marker. Checking gauge before beginning is strongly recommended to ensure accurate finished measurements.
