Berroco Fatima Knit Top

What is Being Made

Fatima is an intermediate-level knit top designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is available in 10 different sizes, ranging from 34¾ inches to 71 inches in bust measurement, with finished lengths between 24 and 26¾ inches. The pattern recommends approximately 2–4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable fit.

Construction Technique

The Fatima top uses a seamless, in-the-round construction method. The body is worked as one continuous piece in the round up to the underarms, then divided to work the back and front panels separately in flat rows. This technique minimizes seaming and creates a polished, professional finish. Garter stitch bands are incorporated at the armholes and neckline for structure and definition.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch throughout most of the garment is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. A lace pattern is strategically featured at the bottom edge of the top, adding visual interest and texture to the hem area. The remainder of the garment maintains stockinette stitch for a clean, versatile look. Garter stitch is used for the finishing bands at armholes and neckline, providing stability and a refined edge detail.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for Berroco Gaia yarn, a 50-gram ball weight. Depending on size, the project requires between 6 and 12 balls of yarn in colorway #3026 Dawn. A 32-inch circular needle in size 6 (4 mm) is used to achieve the required gauge of 23 stitches and 34 rows per round over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. Additional notions include stitch markers (with one in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of round) and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction.

Gauge and Finishing

Accurate gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies a gauge of 23 stitches and 34 rows/rounds equals 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. Knitters should take time to swatch and check gauge before beginning to ensure the finished measurements match the pattern specifications.
