Product Description
Berroco Feya Cardigan – Knit Pattern Summary
What is Being Made
The Feya is a seamless cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers, featured in Berroco Booklet #391. This intermediate-level knitting project is constructed as a single garment with the body worked in one piece to the underarms, then joined with sleeves that are worked in the round. The cardigan is available in seven sizes, ranging from 39" to 63" finished bust measurement when closed, with lengths between 24" and 29½". The design features approximately 4–6" of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit. Five 1" buttons provide the closure for this classic cardigan silhouette.
Techniques Used
The Feya employs several key knitting techniques that create its seamless construction and polished appearance:
- Bottom-up construction: The garment is built from the hem upward, allowing knitters to try on and adjust length as needed.
- Seamless, worked-in-the-round sleeves: The sleeves are knit in the round using double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming at the underarms.
- Worked flat body: The main body section is worked flat on circular needles before being joined with the completed sleeves.
- Increases for sleeve shaping: Strategic increases (M1L and M1R) are worked at regular intervals to create sleeve cap shaping, with increase frequency varying by size to accommodate different proportions.
Stitches Used
The Feya relies on fundamental knitting stitches that create a clean, versatile fabric:
- Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns.
- Ribbing (K1, P1): Used for the cuff detail on the sleeves, providing elasticity and a finished edge that hugs the wrist.
- Make One Left (M1L) and Make One Right (M1R): Decorative increase stitches worked along the sleeve seams to shape the sleeve cap while maintaining stitch count and creating a polished appearance.
Materials and Gauge
The Feya is designed to be knit with Berroco Catena yarn in the colorway #5440 Jade. Catena is a 50-gram ball weight yarn, and the pattern requires between 9 and 18 balls depending on the chosen size. The recommended gauge is 16 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, achieved with size 10½ (6.50 mm) needles for the main fabric.
The pattern calls for two sizes of circular needles—size 10 (6.00 mm) and size 10½ (6.50 mm)—both 29" in length for working the body. Additionally, knitters will need one set of four double-pointed needles in both sizes for the in-the-round sleeve construction. A tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, waste yarn to hold stitches temporarily, and five 1" buttons for closure complete the notions list.
Checking gauge before beginning is strongly recommended to ensure proper fit and finished measurements.
