Product Description

Berroco Finley is a lovely sweater any child would love in their wardrobe knit in Remix. The pullover features a crew neck, drop shoulders, kangaroo pocket, and fun stripes on the bodice and the sleeves. Finley is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up, and then shoulders are seamed, and sleeves are picked up along armhole edge and knit flat to the cuffs. Sides and sleeves are seamed. The neckband stitches are picked up along the neck edge and worked in the round. Berroco Remix is a wonderfully soft, non-wool tweed made from 5 recycled fibers, including nylon, cotton, acrylic, silk, and linen! Remix has deep colors with a weathered effect that look great in finished projects.

Berroco Finley Kids Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Finley is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed for children in sizes 2 through 10. This pullover-style jumper features a sophisticated striped pattern and is available in five graduated sizes with finished chest measurements ranging from 26 inches to 33½ inches and lengths from 13½ inches to 21 inches. The sweater is designed to be worn with approximately 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable fit.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for knitters with some experience. The construction begins with ribbed cuffs and waistband worked on smaller needles to create elasticity and structure. The body is worked primarily in stockinette stitch on larger needles, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern incorporates a complex repeating stripe sequence that requires color changes and alternating knit and purl rows to create textural variation. Seed stitch is worked as an accent element within the stripe pattern, adding visual interest through alternating knit and purl stitches on the same row. The pattern uses circular needles for working the ribbed sections, demonstrating intermediate-level construction methods.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Finley is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates the smooth, flat fabric base. The pattern features a detailed 30-row Stripe Pattern that combines multiple stitch techniques:

  • Garter stitch sections (knit rows creating horizontal ridges) worked in the contrast colors
  • Reverse stockinette stitch sections (purl-side facing outward) for textural contrast
  • Seed stitch (alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern) worked in the main color as a focal point within the stripe sequence

The stripe pattern repeats consistently throughout the body of the sweater, with the sequence incorporating the main color (Old Jeans) and two contrast colors (Buttercup and Birch) in a carefully orchestrated arrangement that creates visual rhythm and depth.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Finley is designed to be knitted with Berroco Remix yarn, a durable and versatile fiber choice. The yardage requirements vary by size, calling for 2 to 3 balls of 100 grams each of the main color #3927 Old Jeans, plus 1 ball each of the contrast colors #3922 Buttercup and #3901 Birch. This yarn selection provides excellent stitch definition, making the stripe pattern and textural stitches clearly visible in the finished garment.

The pattern requires two sizes of knitting needles: size 6 (4 mm) needles for the ribbed sections and size 8 (5 mm) needles for the body. A 16-inch circular needle in size 6 is specified for working ribbed sections. Additional notions include stitch holders, a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches and 23 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, with a different gauge of 17 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches when working the stripe pattern, reflecting the textural density created by the varied stitch techniques.
