Berroco Foehn Cardigan by Norah Gaughan

What Is Being Made

The Foehn is a seamless cardigan designed by renowned knitwear designer Norah Gaughan. This garment is worked flat on circular needles and features a classic cardigan silhouette with button closure. The pattern is available in seven sizes, ranging from 30" to 48" bust, with finished bust measurements from 32" to 50" and lengths from 25½" to 37" from the center back.

Techniques Used

This cardigan is constructed using seamless, flat-worked techniques, which allows for precise shaping and a professional finish. The pattern incorporates strategic decreasing at the shoulders to create proper garment structure and fit. Decreases are worked at regular intervals—either every 4th, 6th, or 8th row depending on size—to gradually shape the front shoulders. Additional decreases are strategically placed to refine the overall silhouette and ensure proper drape.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (st st) – The primary stitch throughout the cardigan, creating a smooth, classic fabric
  • Knit and Purl Decreases – K2tog (knit two together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) are used for shaping shoulders and creating fitted details
  • Garter Stitch Elements – Implied through edge stitches (k3 at edges) to provide stability and a finished appearance

Materials Required

This pattern calls for Berroco Linsey yarn in color 6552. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 7 to 16 50-gram hanks depending on the finished bust measurement selected. Knitters will need 36" circular knitting needles in sizes 5 (3.75mm) and 7 (4.5mm) to work the pattern. Additional notions include stitch markers, stitch holders for holding stitches during construction, and one 1" button from One World Button Supply Co. for the cardigan closure.
