Berroco Granger Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Berroco Granger is a seamless, top-down cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers. This intermediate-level knitting project features raglan shaping and is available in seven sizes ranging from 33" to 52" bust circumference. The finished length varies from 26¼" to 28¼" depending on size, offering a versatile fit suitable for various body types and styling preferences.

Construction Technique

This cardigan is constructed using a top-down seamless method, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a garment that is worked continuously from the neckline downward. The yoke is shaped using raglan increases, a classic shaping technique that creates diagonal lines from the neckline to the underarms. Once the yoke is complete, the pattern divides the stitches to work the body and sleeves separately. The body is worked flat in one piece from the top down, while the sleeves are worked in the round from the top down. The front band is picked up and worked afterward during the finishing stage, allowing for a polished, professional appearance.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The primary stitch used throughout this cardigan is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side. Raglan shaping is achieved through strategic increases worked on right-side rows. The pattern employs raised left-leaning increases (LLI) and raised right-leaning increases (RLI) to create decorative, nearly invisible increase lines that follow the raglan shaping. These increases are placed at specific intervals marked by stitch markers, which help organize the different sections of the yoke (right front, right sleeve, back, left sleeve, and left front).

Materials and Tools

This pattern calls for Berroco Pixel yarn, a worsted-weight yarn available in color #2236 Clove. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 3 to 5 hanks of 100-gram balls. Knitters will need 36" circular needles in sizes 6 (4.00 mm) and 7 (4.50 mm), with the larger size used for the main fabric and the smaller size for ribbed sections. Additionally, double-pointed needles in both sizes 6 and 7 are required for working the sleeves in the round. The pattern also calls for 4 stitch markers to track the raglan shaping sections and waste yarn to temporarily hold stitches during construction. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needle, making accurate gauge checking essential for proper fit.
