Product Description

Berroco Hanneli is a relaxed, easy-fit women’s pullover knit in Remix Chunky. This lovely sweater’s body is knit with a knit/purl waffle-textured stitch, a lovely mocked turtleneck, and dropped shoulders. Hanneli is knit in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The turtleneck stitches are picked up along the neckline edge and worked in the round.  A thick version of the favorites Remix and Remix Light, Remix Chunky will be a great addition to the family! This yarn is machine washable, so it is perfect for children's items and adult garments.

Berroco Hanneli Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

The Hanneli is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This pullover garment is available in ten sizes, ranging from 35½ inches to 72 inches in bust measurement, with finished lengths between 21 and 23 inches. The sweater features a classic construction with separately worked back, front, and sleeves that are later assembled, and incorporates shaped shoulders created using short-row techniques.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Hanneli employs several essential knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. Short-row shaping is used to create the shoulder shaping, a technique that adds depth and structure to the garment's upper body. The sweater is constructed using the flat knitting method, with the back, front, and sleeves worked separately on straight or circular needles before being seamed together. Ribbed edging is incorporated at the lower edge and cuffs to create elastic, fitted finishes. The pattern also requires careful gauge checking and blocking to achieve accurate finished measurements.

Stitches Used

The Hanneli utilizes a limited but effective stitch palette. The primary stitch throughout the body is a Pattern Stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches in a two-row repeat, creating subtle texture and visual interest. Specifically, the Pattern Stitch is worked as follows: Row 1 (right side) consists of all knit stitches, while Row 2 alternates purl and knit stitches with edge stitches. Stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) is also referenced in the gauge specifications. The ribbing at cuffs and hem uses a knit-purl rib pattern, which provides elasticity and a polished finish to the garment edges.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Hanneli is designed to be worked in Berroco Remix Chunky yarn, a bulky-weight yarn that creates a substantial, warm garment. Depending on the chosen size, the pattern requires between 6 and 12 balls of yarn (each ball weighing 100 grams), with the sample shown knitted in colorway #9965 Plum. The pattern was tested and developed using US size 8 (5 mm) and US size 10 (6 mm) knitting needles—the smaller needles are used for ribbed sections to achieve proper gauge and elasticity, while the larger needles are used for the main body pattern stitch. A 16-inch circular needle in size 8 (5 mm) is recommended for working ribbed sections, along with a stitch marker and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction. Proper gauge is critical: the Pattern Stitch should measure 15 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches on the larger needles, while ribbing should measure 17 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches on the smaller needles, measured after blocking.
