Berroco Illetes Knit Cape and Poncho
What Is Being Made
The Berroco Illetes is an intermediate-level knit cape and poncho designed by the Berroco Design Team. This garment features a sophisticated construction with separate back and front panels that are sewn together at the shoulders, creating a versatile layering piece. The finished garment is available in five size options, ranging from 29½ inches to 49¼ inches in width, with a consistent length of 20½ inches. The design shown in the pattern instructions is the 39¼-inch width size.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Illetes employs several advanced knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The back and front panels are worked flat separately using circular needles, then joined together with seaming at the shoulder areas. A neckband is picked up from the finished body and worked in Garter Stitch to create a finished edge around the neck opening. The pattern incorporates decorative lace panels positioned at the sides of the garment, which can be worked from either charted instructions or written row-by-row directions, providing flexibility for knitters who prefer different methods of following patterns.
One important construction consideration is that the lace pattern stitches cause the stitch count to vary from row to row within the charted sections. Knitters must pay careful attention to the stitch count provided after each row in the pattern to maintain proper shaping and fabric integrity throughout the lace sections.
Stitches Used
The Berroco Illetes utilizes several fundamental and decorative knitting stitches:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) — forms the primary fabric base and is used to measure gauge
- Garter Stitch — creates the neckband finish with a textured, reversible appearance
- Knit two together (k2tog) — a left-leaning decrease used in the lace pattern
- Yarn over (yo) — creates the openwork eyelets characteristic of lace knitting
- Slip, slip, knit (SSK) — a right-leaning decrease that balances the visual flow of the lace design
The lace patterns shown in Chart 1 and Chart 2 combine these decreases and yarn overs in repeating sequences to create an elegant openwork design. Chart 1 repeats over 12 rows, while Chart 2 demonstrates the lace panel construction with specific stitch sequences that include multiple k2tog and SSK decreases paired with yarn overs to maintain stitch count while creating the lace effect.
Materials and Gauge
The Berroco Illetes is designed to be knit with Berroco Lumi yarn, a premium fiber from Berroco, Inc. The pattern calls for 8 to 13 balls of yarn depending on the size selected, with each ball weighing 50 grams. The colorway shown in the pattern instructions is #8104 Sand, a neutral tone suitable for versatile styling.
Two sizes of circular needles are required to complete this project. The larger needles, size 8 (5 mm) in a 32-inch length, are used for the main body panels and are the needles on which gauge is measured. The smaller needles, size 7 (4.5 mm) in a 16-inch length, are used for the neckband ribbing. Additional notions include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches during construction.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows equals 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working Stockinette Stitch and the charted pattern with the larger size 8 needles. This gauge is measured after blocking, which is essential for accurate finished measurements. The pattern instructions emphasize the importance of checking gauge before beginning the project to ensure proper fit and drape of the finished cape.
