What Is Being Made

The Berroco Jhumpa is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers, featured in Booklet #390. This pullover garment is available in six sizes, ranging from 33" to 49¾" finished bust measurements, with a finished length of approximately 23¼" to 24¾" down the center back. The sweater is designed with 2–4" of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Techniques

The Jhumpa employs a bottom-up, seamless construction method that maximizes efficiency and creates a polished finished garment. The body and sleeves are worked in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming. Once the body and sleeves reach their required length, they are joined together for the yoke, which is also worked in the round. The yoke shaping uses short rows to raise the back neck, with the back of the yoke measuring 1" longer than the front for improved fit and comfort.

The pattern incorporates stranded colorwork techniques, allowing knitters to introduce multiple colors throughout the design. This multi-color approach adds visual interest while maintaining the seamless, professional appearance of the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Jhumpa features straightforward stitch work suitable for intermediate knitters. The construction begins with a ribbed set-up worked in a repeating pattern of knit and purl stitches (K1, P2, K1) to create elastic cuffs at the sleeve edges. The primary stitch pattern used throughout the body and sleeves is stockinette stitch (St st), created by knitting every round when working in the round. This creates a smooth, classic fabric with a V-shaped stitch texture on the right side.

Yarn and Materials

The Jhumpa is designed to be worked in Berroco Bento, a yarn available in 50-gram balls. The pattern calls for multiple colors: the main color (MC) requires 9 to 15 balls depending on size, specified as #8734 Nori. Contrast colors include 1 ball each of #8735 Ume (CC1) and #8717 Nashi Pear (CC2), plus 1 to 2 balls of #8701 Mochi (CC3) for the stranded colorwork elements.

The pattern requires a comprehensive needle set to accommodate the seamless, in-the-round construction:

• 32" circular needles in sizes 5 (3.75 mm) and 7 (4.50 mm)
• 16" circular needle in size 5 (3.75 mm) for smaller circumferences
• One set of four double-pointed needles (dpns) each in sizes 5 (3.75 mm) and 7 (4.50 mm) for sleeve caps and tight sections

Additional notions include three stitch markers (with one in a contrasting color for round tracking), two stitch holders for holding stitches during yoke construction, and waste yarn for temporarily securing stitches.

Gauge and Yarn Weight

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needle (size 7 / 4.50 mm). Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit, and knitters are advised to check gauge before beginning the project to account for individual tension variations.
