Berroco Juniper Top: Intermediate Knit Pullover with Lace Detailing

What Is Being Made

The Juniper Top is a women's pullover sweater designed by Sachiko Burgin, featured in Berroco Portfolio Vol. 5. This garment is a versatile, fitted pullover available in six sizes with finished bust measurements ranging from 32" to 52" and lengths from 19" to 23¾". The design includes approximately 2–4" of ease for comfortable wear, making it suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Construction Technique

This pullover uses a modern seamless construction method worked primarily in the round. The body and sleeves are knit from the bottom up to the underarms, then joined together to work the yoke as one continuous piece. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. Short row shaping is strategically incorporated in the back yoke section to provide enhanced comfort and a more tailored fit across the shoulders and upper back.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Juniper Top features two primary stitch patterns:

  • Lace Pattern: A decorative openwork pattern worked over 17 stitches that creates an elegant, airy aesthetic. The lace pattern incorporates yarn overs (yo), knit stitches (k), slip-slip-knit decreases (SSK), and knit-two-together decreases (k2tog) to form the characteristic eyelets and decreases typical of lace knitting. The pattern repeats across multiple rounds with knit rounds interspersed between pattern rounds.
  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The foundational stitch used for the main body sections, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric.

The yoke finishing includes a textured ribbed edge created by alternating purl and knit rounds, adding visual interest and helping the neckline maintain its shape.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for Berroco Remix Light yarn in the colorway #6991 Juniper. Quantities range from 2 to 3 balls (100 grams each) depending on the size selected, making this an efficient project for yarn stash management. Remix Light is a lightweight yarn suitable for creating the delicate lace pattern and comfortable drape of this design.

The needle requirements include multiple circular needles and double-pointed needles to accommodate the in-the-round construction:

  • One 32" circular needle, size 7 (4.50 mm) for the body
  • One 24" circular needle, size 7 (4.50 mm) for the yoke
  • One 24" circular needle, size 6 (4.00 mm) for ribbed edging
  • One set of four double-pointed needles (dpns), size 7 (4.50 mm) for sleeve cap shaping
  • Eight stitch markers, including one unique marker to indicate the beginning of each round
  • Waste yarn for temporarily holding sleeve stitches

Gauge and Fit Considerations

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this pattern. The lace pattern should measure 17 stitches and 27 rows over 2¾" when worked with the larger needles, while stockinette stitch should measure 20 stitches and 27 rows over 4" with the same needles. Knitters are strongly encouraged to knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure proper fit and finished measurements. The pattern's design includes 2–4" of positive ease, so careful size selection based on desired finished bust measurement is recommended.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as Intermediate, appropriate for knitters with experience in circular knitting, lace techniques, and garment construction. Familiarity with short row shaping, working in the round, and reading lace charts will enhance the knitting experience and ensure successful completion of this elegant pullover.
