Berroco Khamaseen Lace Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Khamaseen is an intermediate-level pullover sweater designed by Donna Yacino. This garment features a sophisticated lace pattern throughout and is available in seven sizes ranging from 40" to 64" bust measurements, with finished lengths between 22½" and 25". The sweater is designed with approximately 8–10" of ease, making it a comfortable, relaxed-fitting garment suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using bottom-up knitting, meaning you begin at the lower edge and work upward toward the neckline. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which allows for easier pattern management and shaping. The finished pieces are then seamed together to create the complete sweater. The lace pattern is established through charted instructions, providing a visual guide for the decorative stitch repeats that form the garment's primary design element.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The sweater begins with Garter Stitch at the lower edge, worked for 1" to create a stable, textured hem. The main body transitions into a charted lace pattern that is worked in Stockinette Stitch as the base, with the lace motifs created through yarn overs and decreases as indicated in the pattern chart. The lace pattern repeats across the width of the garment, with edge stitches worked in Stockinette to frame the design. Cap sleeves are added through strategic cast-ons at the armhole, creating a gentle sleeve cap without traditional armhole shaping.

Materials and Gauge

The Khamaseen is designed to be worked in Berroco Remix Light, a lightweight yarn that comes in 100-gram balls. Depending on your size, you will need between 2 and 4 balls of yarn in colorway #6901 Birch. The pattern calls for size 4 (3.50 mm) straight needles for the main body and a 24" circular needle in size 3 (3.25 mm) for finishing details such as neckline work. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches when working Stockinette Stitch and the charted pattern on the larger needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper fit and finished measurements. Additional notions include one stitch holder and stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout construction.
