Berroco Kingsey Knitting Pattern: Hat and Cowl Set

What Is Being Made

The Kingsey pattern by Amy Christoffers provides instructions for creating two coordinating pieces: a fitted knit hat and a matching cowl. The hat measures approximately 18 inches around with a height of 8½ inches, while the cowl features a larger circumference of 31 inches at the bottom edge tapering to 24 inches at the top edge, with a length of 11 inches. Both pieces are designed as easy-level knitting projects, making them accessible to knitters with basic experience.

Techniques Used

Both the hat and cowl are constructed using seamless, worked-in-the-round techniques, which eliminate the need for seaming and create a smooth, professional finish. The bottom-up construction method begins at the lower edge and progresses upward. The hat features a crown shaping technique that gradually decreases stitches to close the top. Knitters transition from circular needles to double-pointed needles when the stitch count becomes too small for comfortable circular needle work, a standard practice in seamless hat construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The hat begins with a ribbed setup using a K1, P2, K1 pattern worked over 18 rounds to create an elastic cuff. An increase round using make-one increases distributes shaping evenly before the main pattern begins. The primary pattern stitch features a 20-round repeat combining purl rounds with slipped stitch techniques worked with yarn in back (wyib), creating textured slip-stitch colorwork effects. The pattern alternates between sections of slipped stitches and knit stitches to build visual interest. Crown shaping uses strategic decreases to taper the hat to its finished point.

Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions

The projects call for Berroco Mochi yarn in the colorway #3204 Cookies & Cream. One 50-gram ball is sufficient for the hat, while the cowl requires two balls of the same yarn. For the hat, knitters need a 16-inch circular needle in sizes 6 (4 mm) and 8 (5 mm), plus one set of double-pointed needles in size 8 (5 mm). The cowl uses a 24-inch circular needle in sizes 6 (4 mm) and 8 (5 mm). Both projects require one stitch marker and a tapestry needle for finishing. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches in the pattern stitch on the larger needles, which knitters should verify before beginning to ensure accurate finished measurements.
